The biggest sonic variable in portable CD players is the headphones you
listen with.

This is quite true. In fact, the phones are so important that even a
$30 player will sound excellent if the phones are.

I just bought an Audiophase CDM375 from Best Buy for $30. It plays
CDDA as well as CDs encoded with mp3 or WMA files. It also has skip
resistant technology. I listen to it over Sony MDR-V6 (7506)
headphones, and the quality is superb. Even my audiophile neighbor
agrees.

Another possible headphone choice is the Sennheiser HD-280, a direct
competitor to the Sony mentioned above.

What about Sennheiser HD497's? (for use with a portable CD player and also a
IPAQ Pocket PC for playing audio...)
