Default Recommendation for a CD Player?

Hi,

I am currently using a 30wpc Luxman LX33 Tube amplifier with Vandersteen 1C
speakers and a Panasonic DVD/CD Player DVD-F65 5 disc changer. Will
upgrading the cd player make a big difference in the sound? What is a good
cd player with a warm, sweet sound for jazz? Thank you.

Sorry that your amp speakers and listening room aren't providing the warm
sound that you prefer. If you want to buy a new CD player in a futile
attempt to fix the rest of your system, be my guest, but it's a study in
futility. You've got some nice speakers, but the room is apparently not a
good match for it. Try toeing-in your speakers to get a smoother sound.
Consider adding furniture, more carpeting, heavy drapes and other wall
hangings.

Actually they are providing a warm sound and I like it very much. I am
trying to improve upon the sound by getting a new cd player.

It appears to me that you want to buy a new CD player regardless of what
will improve your system's sound the most. So why ask for advice if your
mind is already made up?

Adding carpet, drapes and furniture are all good suggestions. hanging potted
plants, especially fake ones (they stay the same) may also help diffuse a room.
It never hurts to try, but the chances are toe in will only degrade the sound
with Vandersteens. They were designed to face forward. They do need a fair
amount of space from the rear and side walls. You should give them at least two
feet from each, more from the sides if possible. Maintain symetry in their
positioning and start by keeping them facing forward. Try to put your listening
chair where your head and the the speakers come as close as possible to an
equalateral triangle. Make sure that your listening position is also away from
any room boundaries. That is only a good starting point. You have to experiment
with speaker positioning.

If your positioning is already as good as it can get or close to it, you might
want to consider the CDs you are listening to. The same title of any given
recording may have several different masterings. Some masterings will be quite
superior to others. You can go SteveHoffman.tv to find extensive discussions on
the best masterings of many many different CDs. His site also has links to many
on line vendors that specialize in audiophile remasters. Acoustic Sounds, Music
Direct and Red Trumpet come to mind off the top of my head.

For maximum control over the "warmth" of your system, try a pair of
parametric equalizers, one for each channel. Most audiophiles are skeptical
of this approach, so I'll point out a low-risk alternative. For
experimental purposes, check out the Behringer Ultra-Q 2200 for under $200 a
pair. Low noise, lots of control, and absolutely no doubt that you will hear
as little or much of a difference as you could wish for.

No. Changing the CD/DVD player will not make a noticeable difference
in the sound of your system. If your F65 plays all the discs you feed
it, that's all you can ask from a player.

Alon...

I generally tend to differ very much with Mr. Krueger...however, if
you are searching for a rather cozy sound...high end rolled off,
etc..then his recommendations are in place here. Also, note that a
trial of a good solid state amp with your speaker set up might be in
order.

If you prefer a really decent CD/DVD/SACD player, then the
Pioneer 563A player is worth looking at. Available at Best Buys,
Circuit City...maybe around $139 now. The image is a bit flat
emanating from the speakers compared to some of the rather
expensive players. However, this is not a real problem...all
depends on your audio "sense of values"..everyone differs here!

Mind you this player is outstanding on a good High Definition TV
set...all this decent sound and outstanding picture for less than
$150..can't beat that. These types of Audio Components are
becoming a "commodity"...everyone can make them cheaply
and use really good internal components also! The $5000 units
will contain many of the same components as this $150 unit.
These components flow from the "Pacific Rim"...everyone
uses them..none better nor less expensive.

Good luck,

Leonard...

P.S. The Pioneer also plays all the popular Computer generated
formats..a real plus if you fool around in the PC arena.

You could do a lot worse than a used Arcam 'Ring DAC' player such as the
model 9.

Or wait for whatever replaces the Pioneer 563A universal player.

The system is very warm as it is. I do not need it to be warmer. I am trying
to get a better sound in other respects. I was considering upgrading my
speakers but I realized that I would need a new amp as well so I decided to
scratch that idea. I like my amp very much although it is only 30wpc it
works perfectly with my Vandersteeen 1C's. The sound is very good but I was
told by someone in the newsgroup to upgrade my CD player. I have heard
different CD players and this one sounds very good by comparison to those I
used to use (a late 80's Yamaha which I didn't like and a cheap mid 90's
Sony which was even worse.) So I do believe changing the cd player will
affect the sound. I mostly listen to jazz that is why I say I want a 'warm.
sweet' sound. I have heard some amplifiers, for example, that have a very
hard, dry, 'digital' sound that might be suited to electronic music, for
example, but not for jazz.

Hi,

I have heard different CD players and the F65 sounds clean & bright, with a
good quality sound. I also have a late 80's Yamaha 'natural sound' cdc-60
which for some reason has very unpleasant sound characteristics. My third cd
player is a cheap mid 90's Sony (don't have it here right now so I don't
know the model.) By comparison this cd player has a very flat,
one-dimensional, and somewhat aritificial sound that is not very clean.
