Why does it matter? You've tacitly conceded that speechifying doesn't have
any concrete effect on Iran's internal affairs. It wouldn't actually
accomplish anything as far as Iran's leaders are concerned. As an example
of the emptiness of rhetoric, your beloved Dumbya excoriated three
countries as forming the "axis of evil". How much effect did that speech
have? Most pundits say it caused Kim to dig in harder and deeper with his
nuclear weapons and missile program. It also had the obvious consequence
of leading to Ahmadoodad becoming president of Iran in 2004, an event that
arguably led directly to the frenzy of repression this year.

To whom else could it matter? In your dim little 'conservative' mind, the
important weight of such speeches must be in the nature of making the
reactionaries in America feel better. That's very important, of course,
but Obama believes it's more important to lay the groundwork for a
non-combative interaction between the U.S. and Iran. Believe it or not,
there may come a day when Iran's anti-American fervor is a thing of the
past, and their leaders at that future time may take a post-Shah view of
the region and the world.

I know that long-term thinking is anathema to the kneejerk contingent.. You
folks are genetically impelled to reduce every issue to its simplest
possible terms. I suggest that for the next 3½ years, you and your
hidebound ilk do a Rip van Winkle and leave the governing to forward-
looking leaders like Obama.

points in rebuttal that seemed salient to me. Your reply -- or lack thereof,
actually -- suggests you have no understanding of what I said. All you can
