I've finally stopped frothing at the mouth after yesterdays debacle.
But I suppose I did prove that modern kit is pretty tough and the decision to move the turntable off the rack a few weeks ago has proved an unexpectedly wise move. Plus I've found the source of the hum, it was caused by the aerial distribution units for FM & TV installed in this building, if I disconnect the braid at one end on the TV coax it goes away. Good. One of the reasons for tidying the cables in the first place was that I had got hold of some RCA y cables so I can now plug the CD directly into both amps instead of tape out aux in method that I was using. So expect another amplifier sound report soon. Or perhaps not, any differences I may hear using headphones will probably be due to the different values of step down resistors in the headphone stages interacting with the phones. I'm pretty sure that amplifiers do not all sound identical. Miniscule differences surely and nothing specific that could be pointed to but an overall impression which one gets after listening to an amp for a long period at differing volume levels using varied material. -- Ken |

It does a take some time to get acclimated to equipment. Trouble is...it doesn't take very long at all to forget what the other stuff sounds like. I was getting annoyed with my new speakers soundstage and dancing woofers on vinyl so I hooked my Quads back up. Took about 30 seconds to refresh my fading memory and recognize what a leap in resolution and realism the new ones provide which includes superior bass even with a 50 hz hp filter in place for vinyl. Those Orions look to be a very interesting design indeed. SL's web site makes good reading too. What annoyed you about the soundstage? In the comments I've read about them the first thing that get mentioned is the suberb s-stage. What are you using for ampliiers with them? -- Ken |
