I'm especially interesed in how it might work with a lorger jazz band, like with an electric guitar and several horns. I've read some web comments, and the promotional material from EW; Lots of talk about "rejecting" other instruments' sound and rejecting feedback. But aren't they omnis? So how would they be "rejecting" anything? Wouldn't they have polar pattern and distance characteristics similiar to other omni microphones? What's going on? Is it just that they're closer to the strings, and thus the piano-to-feedback ratio is higher as a result? The thing about omnis for PA is that they are very flat off-axis and that means no narrow resonances that cause feedback modes, and they can sound good very close to the sound source, which reduces the feedback issue a lot. So yeah, you can make it work. Get a couple of cheap omni lav mikes and put them inside a piano. The Earthworks (or even better the Schoeps) omnis will sound more or less the same way without about as much gain before feedback, they'll just sound cleaner. They're well into the thousands of dollars, so I'm hesistant. Also, they have typical EW phantom requirements, 10A @ 48V, which seems to mean that they're really only seeing less than 15V because of the in- line resistors. I like to avoid phantom when possible in live work, although this would be a permanent installation which would (hopefully) not see much cable abuse. The current setup is a crown pzm taped unded the lid, which works OK, but I thought the EWs sounded much better, albeit with a different room and system. The Crown PZM is secretly an omni with a baffle. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |
