I can't seem to bring up any of the saved audio files from my
hard-drive. As I open any session, I keep coming up with two error
messages:

1) "The original disk allocation cannot be used. One or more drives
could not be found or are invalid for this session. As a result, disk
allocation has been modified. Would you like to verify the new disk
allocation?"

2) "Files are on volume unsuitable for playback. Would you like to
copy them to a suitable volume."

These are new problems to me, and I don't understand them, I can't
seem to do anything to retrieve any audio files saved on the hard
drive. The best I can do is get the region blocks to come up on the
editing window. However the blocks are empty (no waveforms) and the
region titles are in italics.

Usually, the only time this happens is if you've changed the name of the hard
drive that had the session files, or if the drive is simply not there
(disconnected from the system). The other possibility is that the files were
somehow erased, renamed, or moved on the hard drive.

I believe there's a mode available when the session first boots where you can
tell ProTools to go out and find the missing files, using an identification
string embedded in the file (or the file's name). I would try that first.

Otherwise, I would make a copy of this session file, open the copy up, and
then try to change disc allocation manually to the correct drive, and see if
it then locates all the files. And DON'T save anything in the damaged
session file. Only save to the copy for the moment, just in case. If you
can get the copy to work, re-save it under a new name, and use that one from
now on.

That problem #2 you have -- "Files are on a volume unsuitable for playback"
-- is one I've never seen before. That's a real weird one.

My last suggestions a call up Digi Tech Support at (650) 731-6100, or ask
over on the Digi User Group on the web at

http://duc.digidesign.com/

and see if somebody can help you there.
