Default Mixer advice?

I'm getting ready to purchase my first mixer and I think I've narrowed down
my decision to either a Mackie 12 channel or a Yamaha 12 channel.

Any recommendations from anyone with firsthand experience with either (or
both) of these rigs?

Plan ahead. If you think you 'need' 12 channels, get 16.

I plan on running a CD player through it plus a mic and at infrequent times,
a couple of mic'd acoustic guitars and vocal mics.... not mixing for a band
with drums, etc..... Other parts are a Mackie 1400i amp and a pair of B52
cabs with a 15" and horn in them.

Which ones? Both companies make some good products and some bad ones.

I can attest to that.

We were running a little 12 channel Yamaha MG 12/14 and it had it's
problems. The mic pres are muddy and the EQ is limited (no mid sweep).
The routing options are limited, either/or, which is not really a great
thing.

We upgraded to a used Mackie 1604 VLZ Pro, one built here in the US
(2003) and the sound cleared up immediately, along with better control
over the EQ and better routing options and more head room. Got the
board for $500.00 USD in fine condition.

Twelve channels may seem like a lot, but it will quickly seem limited.
Go with more channels. It won't cost you significantly more and if you
look for good condition used gear, you can get it for what you might
pay new for the 12 channel gear.

I'd say a Mackie Onyx 1220, or 1620.
affordable and pretty good sounding.

Good suggestion for the OP's intended usage. And I'd say go with the
1620 because there's one mor band in what is a much better EQ than any
of us would expect in a Mackie mixer. That would come in very handy when
micing acoustic guitars. And the DI inputs on those are also really
_quite_ good. That surprised me even more than the quality of the EQ

I know it's splitting hairs here, but I consider these model
numbers to be misleading.

The 1620 has only 8 mic preamps and the 1220 only 4.

And the 1402 has 6 mic preamps. The numbers are parsed as so:

16 or 12 is the number of input channels. You have to look at the mixer
or read the fine print to determine how many of those are mic/line how
many are mic/instrument, and how many are line-only as pairs. The 2(0)
is the number of groups.

The 1640 (and 1604) have 16 input channels and 4 groups. The CR-1604
had only 6 mic preamps unless the expander was added, and two "half"
bus groups (which became a "2" in later models).

How about my Soundcraft 600? I didn't really expect that it had 600 mic
inputs. They're just numbers.

In my experience, I have never been happy with any Mackie from the
small boards to the 8 buss. Let it be known though, I have no
experience with the Onyx.

The old Yamaha MC1204 always held up good (I know I'm old).

Seriously, If you can up the cash a little bit, you might want to look
into the Allen and Heath Mix Wizards. There is a whole lot of mixer in
a rack mount chasis.

Just my opinion

The little Yamaha mixers I've experienced ( as opposed to the serious SR ones )
aren't the greatest IMHO. Quite likely it's not even made by Yamaha in fact.

Agreed.
And my Soundcraft Delta does not have a changing number of inputs.
