Hello,
I'm looking for some good CDs (DVD-A and SACD are fine too) that have a good recording of an acoustic upright double bass (particularly in regards to strumming). Thanks in advance for your references. Best regards, -DJ |

If like me you like Charlie Haden's one no doubt that you will love these : - Beyond the Missouri sky (in duo with Pat Metheny) - Night and the city (live in duo with Kenny Barron) plus... Liebman, Celea & Reisinger : Ghosts Evans, LaFaro, Motian : Sunday at Village Vanguard Abdullah Ibrahim : Cap Town Revisited Ron Carter & Jim Hall : Telepathy Plus so many that disserve to be in this list and that I cannot remeber. |

Perhaps the most poignant collection of spirituals that I have ever listen. plus... Marc Copland and Gary Peacock : "What It Says" Good list. I was confused by the original poster's "strumming" requirement. Stephen Me too !!! In fact my dictionary proposed "gratter la corde d'une guitare" So I guessed that he was perhaps requesting "finger playing" (pizzicato) rather than "bow playing". :-) Lionel |

Thanks for all of the responses and observations into my initial inquiry. I
will definitely consider some of your recommendations. In the meantime, just to clarify what I'm looking for in a double-bass or upright bass in anything similar to these examples... - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_tNSp7MaADM - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_9Ihw2ir1g - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfvZvY4FvRc - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py3jT0uaZw0 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4Hx0VfUbTw - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ttNWFf4ddMo E.G. strumming or finger picking as a solo, in a duo, trio, quartet, quintet, etc. -vocal or intstumental as well. I'm not as interested the sound of bow playing for my tastes. Thanks again. I apprecieate all of your recommendations. Happy listening, -DJ "DJ" wrote in message ... "Extreme" bass?Flamenco electric bass?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xLKuUnuXfig And I keep waiting for somebody to recommend "Superbass 2", the Telarc Hybrid SACD/CD jazz recording of bassists Christian McBride, Ray Brown, and John Clayton. Three different techniques, instruments, and resulting "sounds" all in the service of some delightful music-making. If you love bass, you'll love this recording. Good recommendation. I've seen this album in the shop but I was afraid that it could be a "stylistic exercise" only. Reviews confirm musical quality, humour... and swing ! Thanks. |

The Stanley Clarke clips begins with strumming, stroking across all four strings. The default for acoustic jazz bass is pizzicato, although Ray Brown will pick up the bow every now and then, so all you need ask for is acoustic bass unless you want a special effect, fingerboard tapping, etc. I'll add Marc Johnson to the list. I second your choice Stephen. Especially a very nice work he has done with pianist John Taylor and drummer Joey Baron : Rosslyn http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=11431 A little farther afield: Danny Thompson. Good player for jazz-influenced folk, but not soloistic. |

I wouldn't have looked for John Taylor cds for fear of Duran Duran. LOL ! Johnson was first to use "Bass Desires" as a title, a milestone for bassists. Agree. |
