Default Fixing LCD Backlights?

I've got a Peavey PC-1600 I use for effects and midi volume automation
that the backlight of the LCD has burned out. You can still see the
display but the light is no longer functioning.

I'm no suprised about this as around 1994 the unit was in my truck
when I got rear-ended and flew around the extended cab a bit....after
that it worked but one corner got dark and about 8 years later it
died.

Anyway, this is not an expensive piece of gear, just a standard 16 x 2
backlight.

How hard are these things to fix, or to get the supply for?

I know that some outfit called Telesis sells backlights and LCD's but
their website says "call". I think they actually used to have info and
prices posted there but I couldn't find it.

So any suggestions...are these parts hard to find? Best to go to
Peavey on this one? Easy to repair or take it to a shop?

I don't use the PC-1600 all the time but I would like to get it fixed
and the new model is about $100 more than I paid for mine and is
essentially the same thing (just a bigger jog knob).

Thanks,

Farnell in the UK sell Electoluminescent Sheet Kits which I use
successfully.

Make sure you get the kit as it contains the vital connectors which stick to
the plastic using conductive sticky pads. You must also insulate the back
of the sheet with tape before fitting!! (laminatings best).

I believe Newark is the USA's sister company.

Gareth.

My first call would be to Peavey. Indeed, of all the music equipment makers
around, Peavey has consistently been the best as far as support goes.

You could take it apart and see if there's something easy to fix inside too.

I'd also look around, the PC1600 is very common and not terribly expensive.
There's one on eBay right now for $51 current bid. It's got some problems from
the description, but another will turn up.

depending on the LCD mechanism it can be pretty easy. pull your unit
apart and see. if you're lucky you can desolder a couple points, slide
the old backlight out, slide the new one in, resolder, and good as new.

another hack I've heard is people replacing the backlight with something
reflective (like mylar) and lining the edge of the LCD with LEDs. if
it's small, this can work OK.
