Default PING: Anyone using a Pioneer Premier 690UB with external USB hard drive??

Hey, all.

I have the above head unit, and recently stuck a 40GB USB hard drive
(2 1/2" disk in a chassis) onto the unit.

The USB port did not supply enough jam to make the disk work, so I
added a 5v AC adapter off the cig lighter (seen that idea mentioned in
various forums).

The combination appears to work fine, but I just got a dire warning
from someone in another forum, such that if my AC adapter is grounded,
and the USB connection is also grounded, I could be pushing voltage
from one connection to the other - potentially frying the disk, and
the head unit.

So - does anyone out there have this unit, with a USB hard drive slung
off the port - powered off the lighter?
