Hi,
I'm new to the group and hope this hasn't been covered too recently. I would like to purchase an external hard drive to use with my laptop, which is now an iBook, but will soon be a Mac Book Pro. I use the laptop for 2 track recording, real time performance using software synths (battery 3, etc) via a DrumKat MIDI controller, and sound design using either Digital Performer or Logic (any opinions on those are welcome, too). I would like to know what external hard drives other folks use. I'm looking for portability/small size, firewire, fast drive speed, etc, and low noise level: no loud fans. I guess my request kind of borders between a couple of newsgroups besides this one, but rec.audio.pro has the most members and traffic, so here I am. Thanks for your help, John |

I favor buying them from the main drive manufacturers, like Seagate and Western Digital. |

The 3.5" type hard drives will be faster, cheaper/GB, physically larger and require a wall wart. The 2.5" drive typically only require a single connection (to the laptop) and no external power. Your application does not sound very demanding so you would probably be fine with a 2.5" hard drive. |

The optimal material is extruded aluminum, which conducts heat readily, with the entire enclosure acting as a radiator. You will have more choices if you buy the drive and the case separately. If your purpose is audio, Samsung is a good choice, since they are still significantly quieter than other brands. But except for audio, all other current drives are quiet enough to be unannoying. AFAIK, external hard drives are now pretty thoroughly commoditized. They
even interchange between PCs and Macs pretty transparently. Sometimes. There's some PC format (not fat32) which will hang OSX. I favor buying them from the main drive manufacturers, like Seagate and Western Digital. However, there is a Seagate model, (& I can't be specific because there is no model number on the case,) which automatically goes into sleep/spin down mode after a certain amount of non-activity. It's usually about the amount of time it takes to set up an additional microphone, walk back to the control & hit record. Then, you wait, & wait, & wait for the spinning beach ball. It takes 10 or 15 seconds to wake up. It's a big pain in the ass & I would happily ****can this drive if it weren't the property of my best client. Caveat emptor. Make sure the drive you buy doesn't take naps on its own initiative. Scott Fraser |

![]() Sorry guys, forgery. Bob Morein Dresher, PA (215) 646-4894 Wow Bob this forgery thing is really getting annoying. How do we know who is who? The post sounded reasonable enough. Perhaps you might consider giving up using your real name and posting under a handle but tell us all that you're "leaving the group". do you think your nemisis will know who you have returned as? |

2.5" drives can work on low power and are more silent. Current 2.5" drive are fast enough for even demanding applications. OP prefers firewire, but on laptops the firewire often does not support bus powered devices, while USB often does.

If they were "respectable" why do email messages to bounce with the error message that they don't even have that email address configured on their server? Did you try calling them? What did they say? |

Possibly depending on the exact drive & case used, I would recommend
using an external power supply rather than bus power for audio applications. Spoken from experience. In article .com, Scott Fraser wrote: All Mac laptops support bus powered FireWire drives. Scott Fraser |
