With a 6.1 surround a/v receiver, what is the best setting for
listening to TV programs, i.e. surround, stereo etc? I find w/ the surround setting, the volume jumps all over depending on program, commercial being played. On other hand, many programs sound better in surround. |

You've just answered your own question, haven't you? Choose whatever setting suits the programme you're watching. Personally, I find "beyond the screen" audio effects quickly become tiring and irritating. |

There is no "best setting" because the different programs were all designed, mixed, and encoded according to the whims of the people who produced them. You appear to have already discovered that different decoding settings at your end appear to correlate to the way the programs were produced (and/or with your listening preferences). |

From that, I infer that although we have (dubious) surround technologies, we have no way to tag the transmissions with information to tell the decoder which mode to use. rant I thought "quad" was stupid in the 1970s, and we dodged that bullet due to the fact that the technology of the day could not really support it. Unfortunately, with digital technology, it is practical in spades. Who ever got the idea that I wanted my living room littered with cables and speakers? I'd much rather spend my available budget on two good speakers/channels than half a dozen crappy ones. /rant |
