Default Dist. blocks for hot & gnd; how far apart?

How far apart should I mount distribution blocks for hot and ground?
They're made of just about bare metal.

Also, should I connect the 12v constant (and gnd) on my relay to a
dist block, or is it a better practice to run a smaller gauge wire
directly from the battery? (the relay wires are much higher gauge than
the 8awg dist block)

And is it OK to cross hot and gnd wires (4awg) over each other?

Thanks.
