Haven't checked this newsgroup in a couple of years, haven't been a regular
poster here for 10, but I see that many of the same folks are still here (and still being ragged on!) I see some threads on "best mp3 players" and such. Back in the day, audio compression was a big no-no. . . I remember long threads about how mini-discs sucked because they used data compression. I didn't see any discussion of interconnects, maybe I can unbury that stinky subject! alright, how about the use of reference monitors as stereo mains. does anyone else besides me do that? will aka mrlefty |

I have NHT Pros in the computer room. I wouldn't want them as my only speakers but they are good in the small space. Stephen |

Yes, the Middiot has lost more of his mind. I see some threads on "best mp3 players" and such. Back in the day, audio compression was a big no-no. . . I remember long threads about how mini-discs sucked because they used data compression. Audio lossy compression technology seems to have benefitted from 10 years of having jillions of dollars and lots of free time thrown at it. I didn't see any discussion of interconnects, maybe I can unbury that stinky subject! Why bother? alright, how about the use of reference monitors as stereo mains. does anyone else besides me do that? I've been known to do a lot of listening with small studio monitors. But I wouldn't exactly call them mains. They tend to be light on bass, and often optimised for listening at close range. |

The algorithms have gotten much better. But compression is still mid-fi at best. For anything that's a replacement for a table radio, it's fine as long as you don't overdo it. I didn't see any discussion of interconnects, maybe I can unbury that stinky subject! They're still here. No progress on that front, people still believe in magic cables. Probably always will. alright, how about the use of reference monitors as stereo mains. does anyone else besides me do that? Yes. I don't but others do. Why not? If I'm mixing or tracking something, I want a monitor that reveals everything, warts and all. If I'm listening at home, it's ok to make things sound better than they really are. My $.02 |
