Default turntable spec comparisons

Hello,

I realize this may be a nuisance and you guys may get this a lot but I was
wondering if there was a website that publishes the specifications of a wide
variety of turntables that I could compare at a glance?

I don't know of any website that has that type of comparison of technical
specifications. Hopefully, you are not considering a turntable purchase based
*solely* on specifications? (i.e. without trying to arrange a personal
audition rhrough either a friend or dealer or audio club using records,
ideally, with which you are familiar).

My recommendations would be 2:

(1) subscribe to the phonogram mailing list at
. This moderated mailing list, to which subscription
is free, is IMHO, one of the most valuable resources for discussions of various
types of analogue gear (turntables, cartridges, phono stages, etc.) and also
all types of records. In addition to hobbyists, several manufacturers of
turntables participate in the group, and will answer questions about their
products from time to time.

(2) Get in touch with a few of the manufacturers through their web sites and
ask for some literature to be sent to you in which technical specifications are
listed. Websites worth checking out include:

www.vpiindustries.com
www.rega.co.uk
www.musicalsurroundings.com/clearaud.html
www.sumikoaudio.net/project/index.htm
http://www.michell-engineering.co.uk...turntable.html

These are just a few of the more well established manufacturers that may be
able to provide you with the information you're looking for.

Currently playing (on the VPI Aries/VPI PLC electronic speed regulator/line
conditioner/VPI JMW tonearm/Grado Reference cartridge) :

(1) Neil Diamond - 12 Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 (Columbia TC 38068)

Up Next:

(2) Elvis Presley - Elvis' Golden Hits (RCA ARL1-1707)

(3) Chieftains - Santiago (on CD - RCA Victor 09026)

and back to vinyl:

(4) Clannad - Magical Ring (Tara 5010)

Manufacturer's specs of turntables have generally been meaningless
indicators of technical performance.

As a rule no meaningful technical tests of turntables have been published
in years if not decades. I think Stereophile did one late last year,
partially because I've been goading John Atkinson.

Before that, there were tests in Audio magazine, Stereo Review, and High
Fidelity Magazine in the days when LPs were taken a lot more seriously then
they are now.

Here are some listing of old turntable reviews:
