Hello
What software do the producers of today's pop music use to create sounds that don't come from, or replicate live instruments? What are the most popular pieces of software? Is the name for this a Software Synth? Please forgive me, I am a bit lost in the whole world of computer generated music, but I am starting to get quite interested. Thankyou |

Go buy an issue of "Computer Music" (and a magnifying glass to help read the teeny-tiny type). Spend some time reading it through, including the ads. That'll give you at least a taste of what's being used. Peace, Paul |

There are software synthesisers and hardware synthesisers. Neither are new and have been around for 30+ years, though computer power has made soft synths much more sophisticated lately. geoff |

As you've already seen there are many answers. The truth is that varies widely on the cost of the studio, for recording a single designed to hit the Billboard chart you'll almost certainly use a million dollar studio, so with high likelihood all the software listed by others, plus a great deal more will be immediately available, or at least near enough. Depending on the composer(s) involved it could be anything from general purpose software, to custom software, to custom hardward, to general purpose hardware, to circuit-bending, to microphone tricks, to sampling from an older record and playing with it. Since you're obviously beginning down this path, I'd suggest that you experiment a bit with circuit-bending, if nothing else the parts are cheap. As you get further along you'll want to invest in hardware and software to fit your personal desires. Once you know exactly what style of sounds you're looking for then asking questions might give you a viably small set of alternatives. Joe |

Please forgive me, I am a bit lost in the whole world of computer generated music, but I am starting to get quite interested. Just buy Logic Pro if you are on Mac, it includes everything you need and more. It's the most widespread program in top studios around the world (I know many will shout Pro Tools now, but this guy is asking about the sequenser/virtual side of recording and Logic is handling that in many, many PT rigs). With Logic Pro, a decent soundcard and a keyboard you can get introduced to any side of modern recording and softsynth playing you could possibly dream of. When (or rather if) you grow out of the native Logic synths it won't cost you much to add another one and you will need a program like Logic anyway to run most of the other suggestions. If you're on PC there's Cubase/Nuendo or Live but these doesn't include as much soft stuff as Logic but they are still good programs. |
