Default Leslie Speaker Tubes

I have a question about tube swapping....

In my Hammond organ, I recently replaced two Yugoslavian 12ax7e tubes with a
pair of RCA 12ax7 tubes (for the sound).

My question is this:
Can I replace the 12au7 tube in my leslie speaker with one of the 12ax7e
tubes? I understand this will provide added overdrive. Is there any risk of
damage to the Leslie?

thanks
russ

Who told you that ?

Do you need *overdrive* - whatever that is ! ???? Do you understand what
'overdrive' is for example ? I can't say I do. I've heard of cars with an
overdrive gear though.

Sorry if you're not familiar with the term. However, I suspect you're
probably just being a smart-ass.

Overdrive = distortion

Do i need it? I suppose not. However, it's nice to have in the arsenal under
certain circumstances.

You can try, if you like, although I suspect it won't
sound too good.

I understand this will provide added overdrive.

More likely, the 12AX7 will distort before the 6550's
start clipping. Basically, you're just making the
amplifier more sensitive, you just won't have
to crank up the control as much for the same
volume.

Note: one of the 12AU7's in a two-speed Leslie operates
the tremolo/chorale (slow/fast) relay. The relay won't
work if you sub that 12AU7 with a 12AX7.

Is there any risk of
damage to the Leslie?

None I can think of. If you don't like the way it sounds,
put the 12AU7 back in.

Can you? Sure. Both are nine-pin miniature dual-triode tubes with
vaguely the same characteristics... second cousins in a way. Neither
will blow up instantaneously if interchanged, nor will they damage the
real-estate.

And as fidelity is "optional" when it comes to these sorts of amps,
there is no particular reason why one tube is any better or worse than
any other more-or-less in this particular application.

"Overdrive" is a bunch of crap, but that is not the point either. They
will sound different, whether you like the sound or not is up to you.
But "overdrive" has naught to do with it.

p.s.: You may be getting smartass answers due to your use of the word
"can". Words that are proximate to your question might include: should,
or may. Or, a better explanation of what it is you are trying to
achieve.

so i gave it a shot and this god aweful loud sound came out of the amp, even
with the volume on the organ and the amp turned to zero the sound came out,
loud as hell.. it vaugely sounded like a note was stuck on the organ, but i
know that wasn't the case. i turned it off and on and the sound was still
there.

So, i had to shut down and change tubes back. Not sure what the deal is with
that. Totally unexpected based on the feedback.

As for "should," that's way to subjective a word. I guess "may" is a better
one. Sorry, i wasn't aware of the ettiqutte in this particular group. I
guess you tube guys are a bit sensitve ;-) Sorry, maybe i'm too used to
transistors or something.
