Default Can I use a cell phone "boom" mic as input

I have a multiple input TOA A-903A mixer/ampifier. We use Cartioid
Dynamic 600 ohm mics. Is it possible to replace one with an over the
ear cell phone headset with a "boom" mic?

Any idea if this would be a balanced or unbalanced connection?

Purpose would be to have the mic right by my mouth, and not have to
hold the heavy mic or have the heavy mic in a holder and have to lean
over to it. Specifically I want to use it this way as the caller for
Bingo games.

the mic connection, I believe, is:
,-------------------earth
O O ------------common
O -------------hot

additional info: I measured across the mic with standard DVM - reads
approx 900 ohms.

The mic would be unbalanced. As to how fiesable it would be, the
condescending answer is "if you have to ask, forget it." Those things
have funny connectors and you'd have to change that. You may have to
provide power to the mic, which would invlove some additional parts.
And it would probalby sound like you were talking over the telephone as
I'm certain that those mics are tailored for telephone bandwidth.

There are a number of "boom" mics that you can purchase which will plug
in directly and sound pretty good. I would suggest that approach rather
than try to adapt a poor quality mic.

Yes, but with additional electronics.

The output of those crappy boom mikes is basically right off the electret
capsule. It is unbalanced and also needs remote powering to drive it.
So you will need some sort of battery box to supply power for the capsule
through a leak resistor, an isolation transformer, and also a blocking
cap to keep the DC power off the transformer.

Purpose would be to have the mic right by my mouth, and not have to
hold the heavy mic or have the heavy mic in a holder and have to lean
over to it. Specifically I want to use it this way as the caller for

Have you considered buying a headset designed for the purpose? The
Shure SM-12 sounds pretty decent. It has low output, but it should be
fine in that TOA. It needs no external power of any sort since it's
a dynamic capsule. It will cost more than a cheap cellphone headset,
but it won't pop as easily, and it won't break as easily either.

Yes. But 99.9% of those cell phone headsets use electret
condenser mic capsules which require power to operate.
There are some circuits on the www.epanorama.net web
which describe how to power an electret capsule. There
are no commercially available devices to do this as there
is not much call for it.

Any idea if this would be a balanced or unbalanced connection?

All those electret capsules are unbalanced. You can be
sure that your's is also.

over to it. Specifically I want to use it this way as the caller for

,-------------------earth
O O ------------common
O -------------hot

This sounds typical for a balanced, dynamic microphone.

Too much trouble, and it wouldn't sound good. Buy the proper thing.
They aren't too expensive.
