Thanks, I would just cruise the neighborhood on trash collection day, and find one that somebody tossed. That's how you got the rest of the stuff, right? Just to show I am not an entirely mean guy, some real advice: you ought to check your Sony amp to be sure it has a phono preamp section. Seriously, with a system like yours, check the thrift shops, and try the table out first, to see if it "at least" works. Put the $100 in a new cartridge, a moving magnet Grado or Ortofon ----== Posted via Newsfeed.Com - Unlimited-Uncensored-Secure Usenet News==---- http://www.newsfeed.com The #1 Newsgroup Service in the World! 100,000 Newsgroups ---= 19 East/West-Coast Specialized Servers - Total Privacy via Encryption =--- |

Try the model that radio shack sells, with the built in phono preamp. It's OEM is Audio Technica, and for a basic little player, with everything brand new and adjusted properly, it's totally servicable. I think it would suit your requirements perfectly. They go on sale for less than $100 now and again. |

That's rare, but if you look long enough, you can find a comparable bargain. In fact, here are a few things that end in the next day or two: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ategory=32 83 (this one's in England, so you're going to have to add at least $40 or $50 for shipping). This one ends in about 6 hours, so you better check it out quickly. It looks visually similar to the Sumiko Project One. I've never used one though. Maybe a British person can weigh in... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tegory=48 649 Here's a ProJect One in England (same thing about shipping applies from previous example): http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...ategory=32 83 If you search for turtables, you can find scads of Japanese direct drive turntables for less than $100 (similar to what Max talks about). I don't much care for most of them, but as he says, they will be "servicable". I had a Denon DP45 (the precursor to the above listed Denon) and I liked it. Not a bad turntable at all. If you can get it for under $200 delivered, the seller is credible and it's in good shape, it would be a good choice, although I'd prefer to get it at $175 or less delivered. Here's a Rega similar to the one that Arnold Krueger bought a couple of years ago: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...tegory=48 649 It will probably go for more than $200 delivered (not too much more though), but you might want to track it anyway. You never know when you might get a bargain. |

I wouldn't buy a record player from Europe, based on the fact that they are designed to operate on 240V 50Hz. If the player in question uses an AC motor, it will require a new pulley to turn the correct speed on 60Hz, as well as a step up transformer, and a new line cord. Ad a new belt and a new cartridge, and it's getting expensive. In such a low price range, these expenses, coupled with shipping will total enough extra money to buy a better player locally, in the first place. I think in this instance buying new makes a lot of sense, because turntables are fragile, and can be difficult to set up and get working correctly. |
