With all the fuss that was made recently by Arny Krueger about a slight
drop in Stereophile's circulation statistics, I thought it would be
interesting to post the "Publisher's Statement" circulation figures
for The Absolute Sound in the same 10-year period.

1994: 27,740
1995: No figure published (that I could find)
1996: No figure published (that I could find)
1997: No figure published (that I could find)
1998: 17,746
1999: 23,152
2000: 26,247
2001: ??,???
2002: 30,660
2003: 32,533

Note that TAS published its 2001 figures in its December 2000/
January 2001 issue, which is the only one missing from my collection.
If anyone can supply the figure -- it's the one from the "year's
average" column, in row "G" -- I'd appreciate it. Note also that I
couldn't find published statements for 1995, '96 or '97. TAS
doesn't publish the relevant page number for its Publisher's Statement
on its contents page, nor were its issues given publication dates in
this period. I am _not saying that TAS_didn't_ publish their circulation
for those years, only that if they did, I couldn't find it. Again, if
someone can supply the missing data, that would be helpful.

For reference, here again are Stereophile's circulation figures in
the same period.
1994: 71,040
1995: 79,332
1996: 85,808
1997: 87,219
1998: 83,921
1999: 85,224
2000: 91,384
2001: 84,987
2002: 82,932
2003: 81,668

Note also that as Stereophile was published 3x as often as TAS in the
first 5 years of this period (monthly vs quarterly) dropping to 2x
(monthly vs bimonthly) following Absolute Multimedia's aquisition of
the title in the summer of 1998, the total number of readers who
purchased a copy of Stereophile in each year is larger than those who
did a copy of TAS.

For example, 980,016 people bought a copy of Stereophile in 2003
compared with 195,198 who purchased a copy of TAS.

So, have it all you statistics mavens!

R Crumb was a great documentary. Watch it and see what Crumb thinks of the
slogan "keep on truckin." Then go out and see American Slpendor. IMO it is one
of the best movies of 2003.

I know, I watched it.
The fact that Crumb hates it is irrelevant. The public has layered their
own meaning onto it; it strikes a chord.

I am a Philly native myself. One of the great mysteries of the doc is where
in Philly Crumb lived. I can't recognize it. Possibly Strawberry Mansion.

Are you talking about The Confessions of Robert Crumb (which I haven't
seen) or Crumb, the great Terry Zwigoff documentary (which I have
seen)?

Crumb. Thanks for the correction.

I didn't mean to make anything more out of it other than it is one of the many
ironies of his life. That and the fact that he doesn't much care for the music
associated with his art work.

And Kerouac hated his hippy followers.
