Any experience with this audio interface for computer recording? I
note in the marketing blurb they mention combining audio and midi
recording, but I don't see any midi connectors. Does anyone know what
they're talking about? Does this support Midi-In and -Out?

I want to get started recording to my computer and have a pretty strict
budget. I looked at the Lexicon Omega, but past experiences from this
newsgroup have warned me off. I looked at the Tascam 122, 224, 428
products, but saw mention of power supply hum in this group so that
makes me think twice.

What about other products in the $500 or under price range that you
have had good experiences with?

Get a Digi 001 over an MBox. It has 8 audio in/out and Midi In/Out.
Definitely a tremendous value for under $500.

The only issue with that solution is that you will not be able to get a
001 new, and you are limited to Pro Tools 6.4 LE software and nothing
beyond. 6.7 is where Pro Tools added in the better MIDI functionality.
You would then need to look at another front end if midi is your bag.
Pro Tools does midi in 6.4, but not as well as other programs.

Stay away from the Lexicon most retailers can't give them away.

If you are really pushed to your budget limitation, check out the
Mackie Spike. It will do the audio and MIDI plus it has some minimal
DSP. The software it comes with (Tracktion) is fairly cool, but the
user interface isn't as cool as others.

Mbox with a usb midi interface is all good. It is pro tools and works
most of the time. Mbox is very mobile compared to the 001 rack mount.
It all depend on application and budget as to which whould be better
for you.

Thanks for the replies. Very helpful! So any thoughts on PreSonus
Firebox? I've heard that FireWire is faster than USB. Firebox has
enough ins/outs plus Midi I/O.
