Well, do they? Sooner or later all the Kroomel will be in the tent and
its incessant farting will drive everyone else out. The only people who can lose are the deluded ones, the KoolAid drinking members of the SP great unwashed. The ones who have an open mind and are willing to learn why some if not all of the reviews and recommendations in SP are not worth the paper they are printed on. For all his faults in the area of his internet persona, I'd rather get advice from Arny and Tom than from anyone else on RAO. He may not be prefect, he may even make a few technical mistakes and occasionally disagree with people like Dick Pierce, but in general his knowledge is on the money, something you certainly can't say. Given the crap that's been dished out from some of the real pigs on this board, Arny has and I'm sure will continue to be a constant source of good advice and will continue to be attacked for it, because he doesn't have any reason to back off. |

Arny has given some good advice. He knows quite afew things. Unfortunately, he thinks he knows more than he does, including a few things that are inimical to this hobby, such as "all properly operating amplifiers sound the same." Arny is like a little ayatollah. He wants to sweep away the corruption and deception that characterizes some of the high end, but he fails to see that there is much of that edifice that legitimately provides enjoyment, even if the modalities elude him. In Stalinist Russia, one could walk the streets of Moscow at midnight without fear. The price of freedom is that one can no longer do that. Imagine for a moment that Arny achieved his wish to sterilize the high end, in such a way that no one could be cheated by his imagination, protected from that danger by universal adoption of ABX before every purchase. Imagine also that Arny's occasional wish that individuals without ABX experience were denied the right to voice their opinions. Would we be better off, listening to our remaining choices? Imagine a gathering of hifi enthusiasts, at a wine & cheese gathering, their lips sealed against idle chatter, at the order of Arny Krueger, who forbade them to voice their subjective opinions. Or perhaps, Arny would give permission for these opinions to be voiced, provided that those who hear them agree to receive a memory-erasing drug before auditioning prospective equipment via ABX. This is Arny's universe. He believes certain things, and has made it his mission to spread his gospel. He is the missionary of a new hifi religion, and all those who disagree are denigrated by Arny because they are obstacles to the adoption of his belief system. Islam calls these nonbelievers "infidels." Perhaps Arny would call them "low fidels". |

Arny has given some good advice. Thank you. He knows quite a few things. Thank you. Unfortunately, he thinks he knows more than he does, including a few things that are inimical to this hobby, such as "all properly operating amplifiers sound the same." The claim that proven science such as "all properly operating amplifiers sound the same." is harmful or unfriendly to the audio hobby would depend on how you define the audio hobby. If you define the audio hobby as lusting over magical amplifiers and pride in having acquired them, then of course Bob's claim is true. If you define the audio hobby as owning and enjoying the use of the best-sounding audio system(s) that you reasonably have the time and money to acquire, then proven science is your friend. Arny is like a little ayatollah. He wants to sweep away the corruption and deception that characterizes some of the high end, but he fails to see that there is much of that edifice that legitimately provides enjoyment, even if the modalities elude him.] To secular minds, the ayatollahs are problematical because they want to replace what they perceive to be a corrupt system (ours) with what we as western secular people perceive to be a corrupt and inefficient system (theirs). Bob has failed to show how following proven science (itself a very secular and modern concept) is corrupt. In Stalinist Russia, one could walk the streets of Moscow at midnight without fear. Not true at all. Stalin murdered 29 million of my ancestors in 1925-1939. Only one of my great-uncles of over a dozen who remained in the USSR appear to have survived or died a natural death. The three plus my grandfather who emigrated to the US prior to WW1 either survive or died natural deaths at a reasonable age. The price of freedom is that one can no longer do that. Exactly how free Russia really is, is controversial. Imagine for a moment that Arny achieved his wish to sterilize the high end, in such a way that no one could be cheated by his imagination, protected from that danger by universal adoption of ABX before every purchase. That ABX would be directly involved in the purchase process would be a myth. I've recently explained here why this is so in some detail. I feel no need to repeat myself. Imagine also that Arny's occasional wish that individuals without ABX experience were denied the right to voice their opinions. This would be another myth. Unlike Russia today, the US has practically universal free speech. Anbody can post whatever opinions they want. In fact what Bob seems to want to do is take the right of free speech away from ABX proponents. Would we be better off, listening to our remaining choices? Listen as you will, spend your money as you will, fantasize over whatever you will. However, if you want to have the best possible sounding audio system given the amount of time and money you have to invest, you might want to listen to me. Imagine a gathering of hifi enthusiasts, at a wine & cheese gathering, their lips sealed against idle chatter, at the order of Arny Krueger, who forbade them to voice their subjective opinions. This is a weird fantasy. Even at SMWTMS people say what they will. There are not roving bands of proctors who monitor every conversation to ensure that only ABX-politically-correct things are said. If that's how life is in the midst of a well-known hot bed of ABX advocacy (Clark, Nousaine, Krueger, Carlstrom all present!) what does that say about the rest of the world? Or perhaps, Arny would give permission for these opinions to be voiced, provided that those who hear them agree to receive a memory-erasing drug before auditioning prospective equipment via ABX. More balderdash. This is Arny's universe. No, this is Bob's weird fantasy, regrettably not the only one in his life. He believes certain things, and has made it his mission to spread his gospel. I've got some opinoins, and from time to time I take the time to type them into a computer. Bob seems to have a real problem with that! He is the missionary of a new hifi religion, Actually, if objectivism is my religion, that has been around perhaps even longer than subjectivism. and all those who disagree are denigrated by Arny because they are obstacles to the adoption of his belief system. The world is a marketplace of ideas. People pick and choose the ones they like. Bob doesn't like mine so he makes up little fantasies about them, and promotes them as being revealed truth. Well, guess what. Bob's selling his ideas on the same marketplace as I do. The playing field seems to be perfectly level. Islam calls these nonbelievers "infidels." Perhaps Arny would call them "low fidels". It is true that believing the anti-scientific propositions widely circulated by the high end ragazines and web sites are a proven route to suboptimal fidelity, all things considered. |

Stalin was really rough on the ethnic Germans that lived in the
Ukraine and Russia, of course Hitler was equally stupid with the Ukranians who would have been his allies. The fact is that had Hitler, Stalin and Roosevelt all been shot it would have saved us all a lot of misery even today as the effects reverberate on yet. Kroo is one of those effects. |

Arny has given some good advice. He knows quite afew things. Unfortunately, he thinks he knows more than he does, including a few things that are inimical to this hobby, such as "all properly operating amplifiers sound the same." So it's bad to tell the truth. Arny is like a little ayatollah. He wants to sweep away the corruption and deception that characterizes some of the high end, And that's wrong because.......? but he fails to see that there is much of that edifice that legitimately provides enjoyment, even if the modalities elude him. So if people know that they are spending extra money on cosmetics and not sound quality, what will happen? In Stalinist Russia, one could walk the streets of Moscow at midnight without fear. The price of freedom is that one can no longer do that. In Stalinist Russia, I odubt you would be allowed to make overpriced Hi-Fi gear that didn't preform any better than regular priced gear. You'd be in a Gulag. I'd reather imagine a world where those who criticised him, didn't find it neccessary to mischaracterize his words, like you seem to do. Imagine a gathering of hifi enthusiasts, at a wine & cheese gathering, their lips sealed against idle chatter, at the order of Arny Krueger, who forbade them to voice their subjective opinions. Or better yet, Imagine RAO without the usual gang of liar and idiots. Or perhaps, Arny would give permission for these opinions to be voiced, provided that those who hear them agree to receive a memory-erasing drug before auditioning prospective equipment via ABX. Bull**** analogy noted. This is Arny's universe. He believes certain things, and has made it his mission to spread his gospel. MOre like these are the facts, why don't you learn them? He is the missionary of a new hifi religion, Religion is based on faith, like the reviews in SP. Like the views of people who don't understand that the law of identity is still applicable to hi-fi. and all those who disagree are denigrated by Arny because they are obstacles to the adoption of his belief system. Islam calls these nonbelievers "infidels." Perhaps Arny would call them "low fidels". And the demonstrable facts are that all properly fucntioning amplifiers tend to sound alike. Of course if you have any non-anecdotal evidence to the contrary, please post it. Or do you simply prefer to be the lying asshole you just showed yourself to be? |

You are on record as an apparently satisfied user of QSC amplifiers: http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...808ae3c755cd90 Since this amplifier has at best a very mediocre presentation, it indicates that you have a hearing problem. To entrust resolution of the question "Do all properly operating amplifiers sound the same?" to you is akin to study of color perception by a colorblind scientist. All the alleged rigors of a supposedly scientific method must not be in conflict with observations that are plain to those who can hear them. Rather than recapitulate, I refer you to http://groups-beta.google.com/group/...466aaeaab9eb28. Psychologists have discovered that appreciation of music does not correlate with IQ. More generally rephrased, how much one enjoys an activity need not be related to one's talent at it. I strongly suspect that something about your ear-brain system is sufficiently unremarkable that many people outrank you in acuity. Even if we suppose that you rank in the 80th percentile of hearing perception, that leaves substantial numbers of individuals who may detect and prefer qualities of which you are unaware. If you were a perfect scientist, then, perhaps you would be able to surmount your perceptual difficulties with scientific rigor. In reality, few people are perfect scientists. Some are good, yet unbiased and uncertain. Others are not so good, yet exhibit an undue confidence in their beliefs. Unfortunately, you belong to this category. If it's any consolation, you have lots of company. |

Of course my Volkswagens "tended to" run before I Americanized them, then they did. And your list of DBT's of amps is where exactly? The fact still remains that amps that operate within their range, IOW not clipping do not sound "different" from other amps doing the same. Check Google for the record of Steve Zipser being embarrassed at not being able to distinguish a Yamaha integrated amp from a pair of his own reference monoblocks. |

Robert Morein Feb 23, 11:24 pm [snip] Or do you simply prefer to be the lying asshole you just showed yourself to be? No, I envy your talent in that direction. I want to emulate you. Showing that you have any talent for anything would be a start. That is quite ironic. Bob is one of the few people on RAO who actually has made a stab at showing he has talent. He writes screen plays. He has cited some sort of recognition for his efforts and has offered tro let others on RAO read his screen plays. Note: Lengthy court battles for something you were guaranteed notto win don't count. Neither does years of whining on Usenet about DBTs. What do you have to offer? Scott Wheeler |

It crossed my mind that even if it's true (I don't know) that "in Stalinist Russia, one could walk the streets of Moscow at midnight without fear," that would only be true for some people. Most anyone else could be randomly swept off to the gulag or just plain murdered, including those loyal to Stalin, his soldiers, etc. (snip) The price of freedom is that one can no longer do that. Exactly how free Russia really is, is controversial. Under Putin, things aren't heading in that direction. BTW, I think Bush's recent praise of Russia's neighbors who are moving toward freedom has been interpreted (by at least a few people) as a comment on Russia's decline in freedom. This would be another myth. Unlike Russia today, the US has practically universal free speech. Anbody can post whatever opinions they want. For those who want to exclude certain opinions and/or posters, there's always the possibility of starting a moderated newsgroup. (snip) Audio content: I've been using a friend's Dell PC lately and have been surprised by how good the audio is when I play CDs and listen with my Grado and Sennheiser headphones. I haven't formally compared this PC's headphone output to other PCs, but my impression is that this PC sounds better than my previous PC. |

I don't see how shooting Roosevelt would've helped. Assuming Herbert
Hoover had remained in office, I think in many ways many, many people would've been worse off, with or without war. |
