*sigh*

It's not where the car audio forums originated. Every forum on the 'net
evolved independantly of rec.audio.car. Although, at any given time they
all shared readership.

The "founder" is Ted Koseki, a student formerly at the university of
Hawaii. On March 14th, he issued a "Call For Discussion" on
news.announce.newgroups, which follows:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is a formal call for discussion for creating the newsgroup:
"rec.audio.car".

After some help from some fellow netters, the journey to create
"rec.audio.car" is underway.

This is a formal call and the discussion will last from 12:00AM EST
March 14, 1990 to 12:00AM EST April 8, 1990.

This newsgroup will be used to discuss matters of car audio and electronics.
Topics to be included a car stereos, car alarms, cellular phones, car
audio competitions, etc. Well, you pretty much get the picture. This
newsgroup will not be moderated. I will be handling all responses and will
post important announcements from time to time.

All replies must be explicit (i.e. either a yes or a no).

Subject: CALL FOR DISCUSSION: rec.audio.car

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After about 7 months, he reposted this message (per Usenet Rules on new
group creation, CFDs older than 6 months must be reposted before further
action can be taken in the newsgroup creation process), and then
initiated a Call for Votes (CFV).

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After a mostly positive discussion, I have decided to initiate a CALL FOR
VOTES for the newsgroup REC.AUDIO.CAR.

After much discussion and hassles, this CFV (Call For Votes) will be
initiated
from September 23, 1990 to October 7, 1990.

The newsgroup REC.AUDIO.CAR will be used to discuss the merits (and
demerits)
of car audio. Anything relating to car audio will be adequate posting
material. The newsgroup will not be moderated. Please make all votes
distinctly YES or NO. Please make all vote to the address below...

Thanx!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The vote tallies were collected....

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks again to all who participated in this vote. The final vote tally
came out to 157 (YES) - 27 (NO). Sorry for the lateness in the result for
I was quite busy for the past month or so. Thanks to Eliot for putting
up with all the trouble I had putting this vote through...

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two months later, on November 26th, 1990 at 19:10:53 GMT, the first ever
posting on rec.audio.car was made by the news server admin at a UK ISP.
He was asking about what kind of portable radio he should get for his
Nissan so he wouldn't have to wire a new deck into it.

Default Lee Steals Again. This is too funny.....

You know, this is not funny. It's terrible. Lee does nothing but copy
other peoples work. The funny thing is, he's got (allegedly) 20,000
minions. Can't he get at least one to write new material for him?
delvryboy has already proposed the idea, I'm sure he'd be glad to
compile a new, unique, and UNSTOLEN FAQ for Lee.

I guess funny was a bad choice of words. But all I can do is laugh at
the stupidity and outright idiocy of some of the 'members' of CAF.

I think not. I personally don't feel that seniority automatically
engenders respect (unless you're in the military). Respect is earned on
an individual basis. Respect me for my contributions, and for how I
treat you (and others), but don't just shell out respect because I've
been here for a while.

I haven't been on here since 90. Eddie likely holds the alltime record
(92 or so, I think). I've been here since 94, with some frequent gaps in
service. I don't want anyone to think I was a first hand witness to
these events. I just researched it on DejaNews when I first joined RAC
so I wouldn't be a *complete* newb.

Thanks for the history. was an interesting read.

No problem. I'm thinking of adding it to the FAQ, if Ian is interested
in a section about *rac* itself.

I don't know.

I don't think that the history of RAC is truly a FAQ, although it is
interesting. We could always reference it in the FAQ.

Thanks,

Ian
