Default theoretical speaker idea (probably lame)

i was thinking of an idea. but i wanted to see what the veterans
think about it. the idea probably sucks, but i figured i'd see why
it sucks!

a typical speaker setup is this: cone drivers with crossovers in a
box.

what if you separated each driver by a *considerable* distance
(several feet) and employed a steep crossover? i'm thinking something
like tweeters at 5 feet high, mids at 3 feet high and bass on the
floor in big boxes. so each speaker is several feet from each other.
and spaced out pretty far left-right as well.

then the steep crossover (e.g. 24db/octave) would help you not hear
the same sound duplicated in the different range drivers. and the
fact that the speakers are spread out far would help with phasing
problems because they are so far away from each other that 3:1 spacing
law comes into effect as if you were miking a brass section to avoid
phase issues.

then you listen from about 8-10 feet away to have it all blend back
together.

it's kind of like a satellite-sub idea, but you are also separating
out the mids into their own boxes/air spaces as well.
