Default Schoeps MK2s & KA40

I'm going to experiment with this combination pretty soon. Has anyone
had good experiences using this type of setup with spaced omnis?

How much extra reach do you think the comination of the MK2s and the
KA40 balls will afford me? I'll be recording in a small-ish theater
seating for approx. 600. Reverb time ('guestimate') in the 1.3 secs
vicinity. The performance will be baritone vocal with piano
accompanyment -a Bosendorfer, big sound lots of color,
Schubert/Schuman repetoir.

Because the piano will be upstage of the voice I'd like to push the
mics back into the room a little more so that I don't over-emphasize
the vocal. I've run into this problem in the past with a piano
quintet; the piano being upstage of the strings. I'd really liked to
have captured more of the piano tone. Moving the main pair higher
helped a little but the closest instruments still dominated.

Thanks.

You may need to go really high to get the balance you want.

Generalloy , I like the vioce to be more forward in the mix, usually the piano
is just support.

I use a Jecklin disc with my MK2s.

I am really interesrted in how the KA40 balls affect the sound. I would be
willing to try them , but that is a lot of money for an experiment.

OTOH, I have a friend with a lathe and that might be a more affordable
alternative.

Results:

In terms of distance the KA40 seemed to allow me back off the subject
an extra 1/3 the original distance while keeping the direct:reverb
ratio more or less intact. The 'color' of the presence boost did seem
to affect the neutrality of the microphone. This would appear to be
the trade-off.

This was an initial check with a single voice. I shall try a live band
in my next experiment.
