Default sound quality on a budget

does anyone have an opinion on what 6.5" components and 5x7 or 6x9"
speakers provide the best sound quality? I will probably get an amp
but no sub, and will use the components in the door, and the others
behind the seats in a regular-cab small pickup.

I don't want to blast the neighborhood, I'm 47- but I don't listen to
AM talk radio either. I just want good sound. I wont spend tons of
money but I'm willing to get what I need. I already have a few layers
of Dynamat in place and that helps a lot.

I heard some speakers 9 years ago when I got a system in my previous
car and based on comparisons got Soundstream Granite 6x9s.
At the same time I listened to some Oz speakers, and they sounded
really good, a lot better than anything else, but were also out of my
reach.

Is there still a big difference betw. Oz and all the others, or is the
difference smaller now? It has been 9 years and from what I heard
a lot has changed in the world of car audio, and there's no place to
listen to much beyond the obvious names around here.

Also I heard that most if not all of the car speakers are made by
VIFA and DALI and companies put their own name on them and
maybe make the cross-over and that's it. Any ideas?

TIA

What kind of budget are we talking about? And what expectations do you have for
the system? A lot has changed in car audio, as you've said, but quality still
costs money. Oz Audio still makes a GREAT speaker, among my favorites. But
there are many other new or improved speakers on the market today that may not
have been as good or existed at all 9 years ago. If you're not looking for a
sub and sub amp, then a really nice system is possible for $800 to $1,000,
which should include installation and wiring. I can reccomend Alpine's Type-S
line and Pioneer's REV series speakers as "reasonablly" priced speakers, but
you may have other options.

thanks. $1000-1200 may be about my limit, and what I want is just

speakers, that's not really a concern. This is a one-time expense, and
this vehicle will be around a while as it is in really good shape and
only has 35k miles on it. So I want speakers that are as impressive
compared to the usual suspects as those Oz were that I heard in 1995.
What do you know of besides Oz that are really good? What are your

TOM ,
First off what kind of truck - make/model/year do you own ? The reason
I ask is there are many "stealth boxes" that integrate into the truck
perfectly . A sub is somewhat essential in a good sound quality system
.. Even an 8" sub powered by 150 watts in the cab will sound great over
no sub whatsoever . You will miss out on so much of the music leaving a
subwoofer out ..
As far as your $1200 max budget , you can EASILY work a nice head unit
, amplifier(s) , LOVELY component speakers , and a subwoofer and
stealth box in on that budget .. If you are worried about lack of space
, there are quite a few very small high quality amps I know of you
could fit under the front seats .. Amps I know for a fact do not get
the least bit hot .. I could help in more detail if you like , just
reply and leave your email .. Pricing is the key here it seems , and I
already have the major pieces in mind .. Reply with your email and get
your new system started ..

I prefer the JBL power series speakers. They are a little more
expensive but worth it.

1997 Ford Ranger, regular cab. Not much room for a stealth box.
If I had the extended cab I would just get an Infinity BassLink.

You mention 'lovely' component speakers - what brand do you have in
mind? I am looking for speakers that sound MUCH better than any of
the more widely availabe brands.

An amp could go on the back wall, behind the seat. Not really any
other place to put it.

the head unit is OK for the moment.

thanks for the info

Here was my setup for a while:

old skool a/d/s AL6 (I love these) used in great shape $100 bought years
ago
MTX Pro 4000X5 5 ch amp $200 ebay New old stock with warranty
1 JL audio truck box loaded with 1 10W0 really cheap, new from local store
who had it in stock forever and wanted it gone. (I think $125)
Alpine CDA 7839 I bought 5 years ago new and ran with the stock speakers
forever. Could go with a new equiv for less than $250

That comes to $575 not including wire, carpet, mounting wood, and my time.

The AL6's are BIAMPED from the MTX... BIG DIFFERENCE!!!

tweets in the kicks and 6.5's in the doors

It resides in a 95 Dodge Dakota

I am a Live audio and studio engineer, and i am very happy with it. It
looks nice on the Smaart curves and images well. I do not compete.

The original plan was to use 4 6.5" woofers out of Alesis monitor 1's for
subs and give each speaker a channel of and a/d/s 860MX. I expected it to
just kill and leave me with the ability to say that there is no speaker
larger than a 6.5". Fabrication time was limited and I found the amp had a
blown channel, it's still on my bench waiting for my attention. I'll let
you know what comes about of that project!

Tom,
I would suggest this MTX sub box http://tinyurl.com/3o6fk .. You may
want to sell the sub and replace it with a better SQ sub though
eventually or right off .. an ID10 v.3 would be perfect for the boxes'
size .. Sub box includes an Xtant Z104 sub . Not a bda sub , but not
all that great either . You may want to write seller and ask can you
buy a box alone for $160 as the sub is only worth about $40 .. Sub on
one side , amp on the other as in photo in that auction ..
Components - those considered the BEST by many are near $1000
themselves !! I would definately recommend ID Chameleons for a moderate
priced ..
Sound Quality is more a matter of damping your truck 101% properly and
imaging your speakers right .. The best speaker can sound only
marginally better than a normal Infinity set if not ..
It appears that your front door accepts 6x8" speakers , BUT you can
use 6.5" speakers .. For THE BEST sound quality you should go with kick
panels and a 5.25" set and seperate Midbass 6.5" in the doors .. With
the kickpanels and midbass in doors , SQ would be it's best .. Q-Form
kicks are about $150 or $99 on eBay .. That would alleviate your
subwoofer needs somewhat.. I know of a set that I have used that sound
good and go VERY LOW .. Either that or a CDT 3-way component set would
sound very good .. Approx 200 watts per side would be nice for those ..
An authorized seller named Don ( djdilliodon ) in the actual forum
would get you a much better price than any online store .. I need to
email you , so please reply with your email addy and I can help easier
..
