Default Effective earplugs

Greetings noise junkies,

I'm trying to figure out what kind of earplugs to look for to wear
around the house. At about 5:30, when the kids finish their walmart
and blockbuster jobs, they tend to make a lot of boomy noises when
they drive by my house.

Instead of argueing and educating how annoying and irritating it is to
hear that thumping, I'm hoping they can help me instead. I'm hoping
to get some advice as to what kind of ear plugs to look for.

I don't want to totally stuff my ears, I'm looking for something that
filters out the low frequencies, while still being able to live a
reasonable life. I'd like to be able to hear the telephone, and
converse with others in the house, watch television, listen to the
radio, while wearing the ear plugs that filter out the part of the
sound spectrum of the thumps and booms.

I'm thinking what may work is a compressable, moldable foam type of
plug with a small hole with a small plastic pipe in the middle that
will let through the middle and high-ish frequencies. It's ok if
things become a little muffled, so long as the thumps are not audible
anymore, and so long as I can hear people speak around me without
having to yell.

I figure some people in this group wear plugs on an ongoing basis, as
to be able to broadcast at a level that would otherwise be impossible
to bare.
These types of plugs will probably tend to be straight foam plugs,
reducing the DB level across the board. But I figure I'll ask anyway,
in case someone knows of a specific plug that will filter more of the
low frequencies.

I know about the sound cancelation headphones from Bose and a few
other companies. They don't really work, because they need to 'hear'
a steady ongoing sound, apparently, whereas this booming is irregular.
Besides, I'd like to be able to turn my head and not having to wait
for the headphones to tune in before I can enjoy a non-booming
environment again.

help!
