What kind of lubrication might I use?
Which parts tend to be squeaky, and where can I find them easily? Thanks in advance, Paul |

What kind of lubrication might I use? Depends on what is squeaky. I'd start with turbine oil on anything with a sleeve bearing, and a light instrument grease on things that need greasing. Which parts tend to be squeaky, and where can I find them easily? Usually if something is squeaking, it's the shell and not the deck. But the deck service manual will have complete directions on equipment lubrication, which is usually an annual sort of thing. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |

In my case(s), I'm with your last comment - - it's almost invariably been the actual cassette which is doing the squeaking and not the deck. -- David Morgan (MAMS) http://www.m-a-m-s.com http://www.artisan-recordingstudio.com |

I will get some turbine grease and start selectively lubing. |

Thanks in advance, Paul I think the cassettes may have caught moisture similar as reel to reel tapes do. The squeak is very loud and high pitched then and it can even be reproduced trough loudspeakers. Try to squeeze hard the cassertte box, just pay attention not to break it. Then slam the box one or two times to your palm and see if the squeak is gone. If it is still present, well, try to dismantle the box and see whether there arte deposits on the tape way and if needed, clean. This problem is quite common and stubborn nowadays. I have some old Schotch cassettes, back coated, which rewind problematically, because they wanted the tape to rewind perfectly 20+ years ago. Sigh. Edi Zubovic, Crikvenica, Croatia |

But has anybody ever rigged a playback deck to play problem tapes pulled from their shell (shucked?) and play them (without the shell)? Of course it would have limited uses but if you had a batch of bad tapes it would seem easier to be able to pull them out and play them (possibly for just digitizing and then scraping the originals) like that than doing the case transfer. Just curious. |

Just curious. Yes. A government agency that I have worked with has an ATR-100 rigged up with funny 1/8" guides and a funny head for this sort of thing. Although they don't have a regular cassette head. The problem is that the shell is part of the cassette system, and if you take the tape out of the shell and put it into another shell, the azimuth changes. Same if you put it on another transport. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |
