Default What Midi Generator to Use With Sonar?

Software synthesizer? External hardware synthesizer? I am confused! I
currently use Sonar 2.2 (thinking about going 3.0 Producer), XP Home, Dell
2.4 chip and the Aardvark 24/96 Direct Pro sound card. I have been using
the Roland VSC software synthesizer and it has been extremely unstable.
Obviously my Aardvark 24/96 Direct Pro does not have an onboard synthesizer
so I need a great sounding and reliable software or hardware synthesizer.
Currently, I am thinking that I want something hardware based (mostly
because I have struggled with a software synthesizer) and rack mounted. I
am looking for suggestions as to what Midi sound modules work very well with
Sonar. What are you using that you like and why?

I would have trouble thinking of worse sounding synth sounds than the the
VSC. Get some good soundfonts (lots of good frees on the net) and some good
soft synths. What type of music do you do?

What soft synths use sound fonts?

I'm particularly fond of my nanosynth as an outboard. I also have an older
PC that I set up with a DOS softsynth, AXS, that's kind of fun -- I use
that as an outboard synth for my main computer. I have a Yamaha VL70-m
because it works well with the WX-5 wind controller.

I like to make backing tracks with buzz. That one is a bit of a learning
curve.

What you use really does depend on the music you're making. Emulating an
orchestra is a lot different than generating dance loops.

I compose mainly rock tunes and use MIDI for instruments that I can not play
well or at all. I like the idea of soft synths but I got a bad start with
the VSC. I would like to hear some suggestions as to what my soft synth
options might be. Who are the leaders in the soft synth business? What are
you using?

There are a ton of soft synths out there, a lot of which may work for
you. Some that I use regularly are

Atmosphere and Trilogy
Albino
Absynth
Waldorf ppg wave
Combo sister
D'cota
Knagalis
Edirol orchestra
Exciton
Plex
Rhino
Discovery
Juno
Pentagon
Cube
Fatsondo
PlasticZ
Pro-53
Reaktor
Virsyn Tera

I doubt you will find one synth that will produce all the tones you
may need.Try these if available, and pick the ones you like.
