I was over at a local audiophile's house to pick up a non-audio-
related purchase when he mentioned he had just finished a speaker resto. They were Altec Model 19s, with stock drivers and a mildly tweaked crossover. I couldn't believe how great they sounded. I had not realized that this particular speaker was this good. His amplifiers: homebrew push pull triodes with a single 6080 (it's a twin triode) per side. Maybe five or ten watts a channel. He was playing Stanley Clarke at damn near concert volume. How come I never have seen these things before? The only Altecs people talk about are VOTTs or 604s. |
