I'd suggest either an AKG C414 or an AEA R84.
And of course a good preamp to go with the chosen mic.

A figure of eight in a live venue?

Actually, yes. You'd be surprised what you can do with it if you
are careful where you put it. The R84 wouldn't be my first choice, mind
you, but you could do a lot worse and the null is pretty deep.

With no PA? What's not to like? If it's good enough for Frank Sinatra,
it should be good enough for Bob's singers.

Yes, Ty, a jazz combo in a small bar needs no PA. It ain't all about
effete acoustic fingerpickin' in sensitive settings! g

Ya know, Hank, as you continue to answer my questions lately, your attitude
gets bigger and bigger. Even with the G I'm not getting it. So please knock
it off.

I think the joke works well running with 2. c.

Get our yer sense of humor and git over the perceived slight!

(Or get thee thy tea cup and raiser thy little finger appropriately.)

Back to the subject, no PA for a jazz combo in a little room. If I must
play a small lightly strung guitar with my bare fingers in the same
room, I will probably need sound reinforcement. (I have lousy
fingernails.) If get to play a dread with mediums and use fingerpicks,
maybe not.
