I hate theatres! Nasty dry acoustics and overbearing HVAC. No place for a
proper all-acoustic concert. This week's neat trick is to take a standard (2-4 second) hall reverb and shrink it to about 2/3 (.66) seconds and mix it very sparingly into the final mix. Such a short time is barely noticeable but it really opens the sound. Otherwise, you hear each hesitant squeak of performers oppressed by the lack of response from the hall. The reverb glues it all together and takes you out of that ugly hall into a more reasonable venue without trying to become Carnegie Hall. |
