Bob Morein (310) 237-6511 yeah, A laptop is my digital music server. i rip using EAC compressed in Flac format. the whole library is stored on a 500Gb external drive but I can shuffe about a third of my total files in and out of my pc hard drive. It is filled les than 1/3, to 134 Gb of music. i am temporarily using a cheap DAC (Konnect8) connected by firewire. I have a new DAC on order, a Brigatta tube DAC form PAcific Valve and Electric. Its a modified Lite Audio 60 DAC. One mod is that it is a USB DAC, but, it also accepts optical I plan to go direct from my pc to the DAC by USB, despite USB shortcomings. But, at some time, I will also try going firewire from my pc into some typer of adapter/interface that has optical out (such as by Hagerman). THe PC is a last years model TOSHIBA Pentium Dual Core SAtellite 183 mHz. It was only $476 ON uBid as a factory repack. It is dedicated to nothing else but playingmusic , so there is not relatively much background activity going on. I do my ripping on my other laptop, swapping an external drive between the two |

I built a "PVR", (personal video recorder) with one of the new motherboards that has HDMI video output and specialized circuitry for decoding high definition video. It was built according to principles described onhttp://www.silentpcreview.com/. It is very near the threshold of audibility. I am a devotee of synthesized surround. Since the motherboard has 5.1 audio of alleged hiqh quality, I have been wondering if there is any software that would replace the stack of HT processors which I keep in order to listen to the sound fields encoded in rom. Thus far, I have found nothing at the level of what Yamaha or Sony provide, consisting of sophisticated hall ambience measurement/simulation. Not my area of expertise, but google shows this: http://www.holistiks.com/amphiotik/m...ts&file=_demos Stereo, and not all successful. Don't many soundcards have DD and DTS built-in? snip Stephen |

I run the output of the PC into an aux input of my stereo so that I can listen to internet radio anywhere in the house, mosty www.pandora.com It's mid-fi at best (128 bps MP3), but it allows me to discover new artists or just put on background music that plays endlessly without me having to get up to change the CD or LP. Since most PC's are noisy I won't have one in the listening room(s) - what's the point of 90db S/N when you're listening at 85 dbSPL and the computer fan is whirring away at 50 dbSPL? //Walt |

It is a simple matter to replace the fans with quiet units. The PC in my HT setup is inaudible at distances greater than about 4'. In my BR, I went one step further: the system's case and cpu fans run below 900rpm and it doesn't have a hard drive. It boots off the network. It is inaudible beyond 2'. |

You're right, but it is possible to construct a silent PC. Very unlikely. Even if you eliminated all of the fans, you'd still be stuck with any number of incidental noses, particularly in the power supply and hard drives. With Zalman, Scythe, Silenx, and Antec components engineered for quietness, I have a PC which is at the threshold of audibility. I seriously doubt that this PC has noise at 1 meter that is 0 dB or below. If it is as good as 10 dB, I'd be very surprised. It is inaudible in the presence of any kind of recorded music, played at any listenable level. Whatever that means. Basically, you're depending on the music to mask the non-trival amounts of noise that your PC creates. |

Not to belittle your expertiese™, Turdball, but you don't have to posture on RAO in order to cover your real-world lies. None of those pea-brained sheep who buy your turd-boxes for $399 is smart enough to figure out Usenet. The certain knowledge of your incompetence is never going to leak out from Usenet into the closed circle of you victims -- er, customers -- so don't even waste your keystrokes on strawborgs. |

![]() StynchBlob volunteers to lead today's autogratification session. As per usual, his intonations are phrased in the peculiar code endemic to fully committed masturbators. As a courtesy to RAO, I've consulted with a special translation expert, and I've posted standard English renderings of Styncho's grotesqueries. Little wonder considering his hovel reeks of the Augean stables. Translation: "I love the smell of prepubescent boys. Wild horses couldn't drag me away from the Little League locker room." Stopping by rao, you can always count on 'lil Georgie soiling his Depends with unbridled glee. Translation: "I love dirty underpants. I even pay the neighborhood boys for them." His "lifestyle" has, sadly, left him incontinent. Translation: "Golden showers are for amateurs. Join my party and experience some serious urinary encounters." His malodorous detonations repulse even members of his chosen abominative "community." Translation: "I learned the word 'abominative' in church, and now I yell it out when I'm about to cum. Wheeeee! Here I go!" [Note: StynchBlob's jerkoff sessions are reported to score high attendance, especially among middle-aged, married Baptists, but we don't have any reliable data.] |
