Default Fairchild 670

There seems to be some kind of general consensus that this thing has a
special kind of sound.
Can someone can explain, what the buzz is all about? What is it so special
about it?

Pardon my ignorance , but if it is designed to change volume, how does it
sound "fatt" as some people like to say?

thanks
