I'm sure that with a litle reinforcement in high fz, they are the ideal "Jazz-combo" speaker. ![]() I've a friend who is mad about Lowther Horns. I never hear Lowther speakers, just know that they are very expensive. If they're anywhere comparable to the Fostex horns, it's not my kind of speaker. Dynamic as hell, yes, but fatigueing to my ears in the long run. Fatigueing ? Sincerely I just don't know because I haven't hear them long enough. What seduces me was the incredible precision and details in the midrange : human voice, piano, guitar arpeggio, drums... were clear as crystal. The bass were not as "round" as modern references but quick and also precise. I read that problems can come from recording with a lot of different instruments, symphonic orchestra... But it's not really my cup of tea. Anyway, it's fun to build your own stuff, isn't it? I guess that it's the same pleasure you have with your Citroën. You are driving a very nice, cool and rare car for a (relative) modest price. Moreover this keeps your brain and fingers active. I also like these contrasting feelings, on one side the pride of what you have build on the other side the modesty because *you* know what could have been built. |

Now, the old Monitor Reds, that's a different story. Ugly as hell, but very pleasing sound. And LOUD! But looks matter too much, so I guess you don't like them, regardless how they sound, right? ROFL. I have a lifetime of equipment selection behind me. My current speakers are Magnepans, not exactly a speaker with a high WAF. My amplifiers are all DIY, with hideous cases with holes in them. Some even have tubes exposed on top. Oh horrors! Oh well, your parents probably don't care what stuff you drag into your dorm room, right? As long as you don't exceed the set amount on your daddy's credit card............. ;-) -- Sander deWaal Vacuum Audio Consultancy |

Monsterous sound is good. There's a guy in another thread about to sell his set of Bose 901 including the equalizer. If you can withhold your snotty attitude for a while, he might be tempted to sell them to you. Add a Sony amp and you're all set up. -- Sander deWaal Vacuum Audio Consultancy |

Wow. And this is supposed to be the mecca of expert audio opinion? AAAAAAHAHAHAHA! Who told you that? Any idea what "opinion" means? ROTFLMAO! If you don't know about the equipment that Biamp has been putting out for eons, then you have certainly been out of the loop. I'm told it's PA gear. I mostly deal with consumer audio. Maybe my living in Europe has something to do with it as well. But why bother your tiny little brain with such details, hm? As for Tannoy not being what it used to be - you are right. They are far better and more well respected. If you say so. My opinion seems to be unique, according to others. Enjoy your political bickering - I'm going someplace where the community knows something about high-end audio, and where they can stay on topic. Oh dearie. Did you ever get laid? I've forgotten more about high end audio than you'll ever know, boy. While you were in your diapers, I sold, installed, repaired and adjusted almost every high end product on the market. Not to mention listened to many good systems in well-treated rooms, unlike your single experience in a clothing shop. What'd they play anyway? J-Lo? Or was it Limp Bizkit? Your real name is Bwian McCarthy, right? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!! -- Sander deWaal Vacuum Audio Consultancy |

(Marc Phillips) said: That's kind of funny, since for the first time in my life I'm actually becoming interested in Tannoy. Of course I'm talking about the Prestige Series, such as the Westminster Royal, GRF Memory HE, Stirling, and the one I just heard and enjoyed, the Turnberry HE. Now that I've gotten into vintage tube amps, Tannoy seems to be an interesting option. Every now and then, Monitors Red and Golden are offered on Ebay and associated sites. If ever you have the possibility, go listen to them, preferably driven by triode amps. They're nothing like your Spendors, btw :-) Really? I just had some guy tell me that if I liked Spendors, I'd like the classic Tannoys. Are you just referring to the Red and Golden? I just listened to a pair of Turnberry HEs, and I liked the sound, but I couldn't really compare them to my Spendors because the rest of the systems are so different, too. Boon |

It's called an example you dimwit. Learn to read a post in it's entirety and give it a little comprehension. Pay attention. So in other words, you went off on an irrelevant tangent that had nothing to do with what I said, and you expected me to go along with it. I find Beatrice Dalle quite attractive. How about you? http://www.cinemorgue.com/beatricedalle.JPG Wasn't she "Betty Blue"? Yes, she is attractive, but I'd rather drag my balls through a mile of broken glass just to hear Audrey Tautou fart on the telephone. Boon |

I wonder if Marc might be better off sourcing drivers from UK/Europe and having cabinets built himself? Classic Tannoys change hands for silly money in the US. That might be a good idea, though one never knows in what condition the drivers are when they arrive. I haven't heard them.. how would you describe the sound? Do they age well? I would think so! As I said earlier, I heard them in a studio environment, and only for a couple of hours. The tone chaperone there was kinda deaf and turned the amp up way beyond "10". They're incredibly forkin' loud to my taste, but they form a good monitor system IMHO. -- Sander deWaal Vacuum Audio Consultancy |
