Default What's a good way to make a mono guitar more stereo?

I know this is basic. I have done over 130 cd's. Still always enjoy
advice. I recored a Blues band electric guitar,p bass and drums and
harmonica. Last cd we won some awards. It was cool. Before I panned
the guitar about 10 o'clock and the harp 2 o'clock. If we dub 2
guitars I will of course pan L and R. Unfortunately I think many
tunes It will be 1 guitar+ solo guitar in spots. I don't know how
they did it but Johnny Winter had a song "Be carful with the fool'.
The guitar does not sound delayed but it's in both sides. Anyone
have any tricks? GT.

It may well have been doubled.

Use a 10 or 20 msec delay, panned. You can use any delay, actually -
it's just that 10 or 20 sec is inside the Haas limit.

Ok I will try 10 to 20 panned out. Here is the JW guitar sound.

I can only listen right now on my tiny laptop speakers, but it sounds
to me like there's little or no artificial delay, but rather the guitar
is recorded in stereo in a rather live room, and they're capturing
quite a bit of the room's ambiance.

That just sounds like room tone/room return. Pan a little
digital room right against the guitar panned left if you don't have a
good space ( most of us don't ).

Another useful trick: use the amp to drive two different cabinets, or
maybe use two different amps. Mike them with separate mics, or maybe
do something like an ORTF pair in the room with both. Or maybe all of
the above, on separate tracks.

Peace,
Paul

1. Record it twice on two tracks

2. Record it with two mikes located some distance apart, which gives you
a delayed and an original signal. Pan them differently.

3. If you put something out of phase in one channel, it will sound like
it's coming from both sides instead of the center. This is hazardous,
though, because it will disappear if played in mono.

That's more or less like one mike on the cabinet and one mike 10 feet away.

It's hard to tell on youtube, but that sounds like real stereo, actually
two mikes recording the room.
