Looking for a module that can take an AES/EBU signal (24/96 or better)
and give me a low noise analog out (105dB s/n). At a not ludicrous price. For inclusion in a powered speaker. Any ideas? -- Dirk http://www.transcendence.me.uk/ - Transcendence UK http://www.blogtalkradio.com/onetribe - Occult Talk Show |

Any ideas? 105 dB sn is a hard act to follow. I'm not sure anything out there really exists if you really want that number to apply across the 20 KHz passband. if you want it to apply all the way up to 48 Khz, I think you're a good order of magnitude off. It's not hard to build your own DAC with a Yamaha receiver chip and a Cirrus DAC chip and a discrete I/V stage... but it's really really hard to get better than 100 dB SNR.... and 105 dB is a whole lot better than 100 dB... --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. Quick Q, since I haven't bothered to look yet - any problems with taking the output and feeding it through a low power passive xover before the power amp (instead of after)? -- Dirk http://www.transcendence.me.uk/ - Transcendence UK http://www.blogtalkradio.com/onetribe - Occult Talk Show |

I bet a nickel that it doesn't actually meet that spec, though. Give it a try and see. If you're looking for a standalone box instead of a module intended for incorporation into production designs, check out the now-discontinued Entech 203.2 DAC. Actual noise is something in the ballpark of -94 dBFS unweighted, which is pretty impressive for something so cheap, and the distortion numbers are quite respectable. Another nice thing is that if you look at the noise floor, it is fairly flat rather than having noticeable spikes here and there. They turn up used at good prices and they actually sound remarkable for a cheapie. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |

I have no idea, because I don't know what the DAC's output buffers are like. No need to use a line level passive crossover, as you can probably steal enough power from the DAC to run a couple of more op amps for an active crossover. |

Jim Williams has touted the following, which goes in and out of sale at MCM: BEGIN QUOTE Here's a nice low budget DAC; MCM Electronics P/N # 50-7774 www.mcmelectronics.com It's a 24 bit 96k dac with 2 coax and 2 toslink inputs, a fixed and variable output and a headphone amp. It uses a nice BurrBrown PCM1716 dac chip with a crystal CS8414 input reciever chip. The caps are all 105 degree rated. The weak spot is the 4558 opamp, I replaced it with a National LME49722MA, a very nice improvement.
