Default DAW Options for a G4 Titanium PowerBook

It's 12" PowerBook G4/1.33 GHz, 768 MB RAM. What's a good DAW for
it? Limited to ProTools? Which flavor of ProTools if that's all there is.

It's also stuck at OSX 10.3.9. Upgrade?

You'll nee a lot more ram, at least 2gb, to run any audio program
well, unless you just use Audacity.

It only upgrades to 1 GB.

You should go to a gig but you'll be fine with that. I have a 786 GHz
with a gig that I recorded tons of stuff on but I did not use a ton of
effects or iVST's.

I think Cubase is the best thing to use and at 10.3.9 you can probably
use at least Sx3 version of it. I You can still boot OS9 on that one
(I think) and if you can pick up an old copy of VST4.1 you'd probably
love it. It is very stable.

If you are going to use a lot of iVST stuff all bets are off as I
never - not ever use them and can not tell you what to expect.

If you do go cubase, let me know and I will try to dig up my old disks
for you. They do nothing for me.

That sounds like a lot of trouble. But thanks for the offer.

I ran Logic Pro 6.4.3 on a bigger brother (15" 1 GHz G4) TiBook, w/1 GB
RAM and it worked fine. Mind you, I'm not a guy who needs a thousand
tracks and a bunch of streaming samples.

10.3.9 was a very good version of the OS, so unless you want/need
something newer, for features that aren't doable in the older v., I'd
stick with it. I left mine right there because I didn't want to spend to
upgrade Logic.

One shortcoming of that machine is the lack of a PCMCIA or other
expansion slot, which can come in handy if wanting to use a Firewire
interface. Getting an outboard drive on a card port can be handy, but I
suppose you could run an interface from the built-in FW port and hang a
drive on the USB2 port.

I found that my FW ports burned out as did my CD/DVD drive and it
ended up time to upgrade. The screen is a bit small but you can plug
another monitor in for split monitors so that is an easy fix.

OK, I just found my disks but they all require a dongle unless you
back to VST32 for OS9. When I bought SL3 I bought a full copy so there
is no issue with copyright theft if you go for the VST32. Let me know
you have a need for it. OS9 was a great operating system to record on
and I actually got far more tracks out of OS9 then I did on the same
computer with recording under OSX. Cubase in OSX really sucked up the
resources.

Anyway I have it if you want it.
