Assuming one has a rack of preamps with which to go straight to tape, would
the line inputs sufficiently sub for tape returns,
Yes. Hopefully the trims work on the line inputs. Otherwise, if you're
using a digital recorder with +4 dBu operating level and record your
tracks "hot so I won't lose anything", you'll have to pad the inputs down
quite a bit when you're trying to combine 24 tracks all putting out
+20 dBu into a mixer with a bus output capability of somewhere between
+24 and +28 dBu.
and the monitoring
problem a live board has in a studio go away?
Yes, if you're recording with something (like a real tape recorder,
DAWs are questionable) that shoots the input right out to the output
any time you're not actually listening to a playback.
If so, the next question in my mind about the Venice Midas stuff would be:
is the EQ good enough for studio work?
The best EQ is no EQ. Are your mics and sources and room good enough
for studio work? That's a smartass answer of course, but then there's
no measure of "good enough for studio work", so the answer is either
yes or no, depending on your own standards and what you expect to get
out of EQ. The best studios with the best consoles still often use
outboard EQs for special problems.
