I'm sure there are lots of recommendations on well-recorded CD's from ths group. Now, when you say live concert experience, I think that gets a little hard to agree on, since we may have different live concert experiences. Often I find the recording sounds better than the live record experience, due to many technical reasons. Certainly the excitement of being there, and being in the same hall as the performers are important benefits of the live concert that are hard to reproduce in the CD or in any media. Interesting that you presented this controversial viewpoint. Glenn Gould, who is legendary in his iconoclasm, (he decided to quit concert performance in favor of producing music in a recording studio), had this lively discussion with Yehudi Menuhin during a historic CBC TV series on music. He asserted that "the recording, surely, is now the standard against which the concert must be judged." http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~mwatts/glenn/ym.html In my view Gould is too deliberate in being controversial, but he is always a good read, especially with Menuhin. |
