Default Which headphones are comfortable?

Hello
I currently own a pair of Sennheiser HD 455 and after 60-90 minutes of
use my ears begin to hurt. Do you have any suggestions on what
headphones in sub US$ 2-300 will match a larger than average head? How
about Sennheiser PX100/200, HD600/590, Grado SR-60/80/125 - are they
comfortable? Other headphones?

Thank you in advice
Jens

I personally use the HD600, and find them very comfortable (even with my
spectacles on all the time). The only discomfort I experience is that
it can get a bit hot around the ears unless the room is cool. I have
not tired the HD455, so cannot comment upon comparative comfort.

I presently have and have used many makes of headphones, Stax, (30 + year
SRX- Mark III , current SR-303), Sennheiser (HD 600), Signet TK44, Koss
(head in a vice model Pro 4AAA), various Sonys, on and on. The most
comfortable are my 30 + yr old "Made in Austria" AKG 240 , and one of the
most remarkable things about them (in addition to a pleasant "airy" fine
detailed sound with and relatively good seal from ambient noise) is that the
ear cushions have remained intact, appearing and feeling exactly as the day
they were first taken out of the box and put over my ears. Headphone jacks
on my CD players drive them plenty loud. Sony, "the one and only'' 's ear
cushions are the absolute pits as far as longevity is concerned. Googling
the 240, I was pleased to learn that I'm not alone in my opinion, try them,
you will love them AND they don't cost an arm and a kidney.

Thank you both for your reply.

AKG 240 you say. I have found three AKG K 240 models: DF, Monitor and
Studio. Which one is it you own? It is possible to see all three
models at http://www.akg.com or
http://www.akg.com/akg_structuretree...uage,EN,cate,7

Do any of you know if there is any difference in how comfortable these
three models are?

Thanks

Hello Jens.
I would go for the Sennheiser 600. And you get a fantastic sound to!
Good luck with the search.

I own both the Sennheiser HD 580 (home use) and the Grado SR-60 (portable
use). The 580 is considerably more comfortable, and I'd recommend full-size
if comfort is your priority. FWIW, some folks prefer the sound of the 580
to the 600. This website delivers decent product descriptions:

Hello Bernhard
I haven't listened to Sennheiser HD 600 yet, but people tell they are
very "relaxed" in audio reprod. and that they are not really that
comfortable for large size heads. Besides that it seems they are very
good.

Best regards
Jens

Hello Norman
I've now read about all the reviews and comments on AKG K 240 and K
401. They both get good ratings. Concerning K 240 several reviewers
tell that it is mainly for professional use, ie. reprod. of sounds is
natural or neutral. That seems ok to me and I will have to give them a
listen before I finally decide. The K 401 aims more at
non-prof./studio listening which is what I'll be using them for, so
I'll give them a listen too. Apparently K 401 is now discontinued -
but perhaps I will be able to get a pair before they run out of
stock.. Do you use 240 for private or professional use or both? What
is your comment on using them in private and for plesure?

Thanks
Jens

When I bought my AKG 240 there was but only one model on the market. A
couple of years ago, seeing these new models I emailed the AKG people as to
how my ancient (but still fully functional) pair stacks up against their
current products. As English isn't their mother tongue, I didn't fully
comprehend their answer (but they did eventually reply). I suggest you email
them to find out which model of their models they recommend to meet your
needs and take it from there.

Hi

Go for Grado, they are comfortable although doesn't look like it.
Best value for money if you choose SR-80, they sound really different
than 60 and they are not so much more expensive than 80-125. Anyway,
you are willing to spend USD300,00, with that money you may also
choose 125. Go for Grado, go for Grado!!!

I use them at home for pleasure only and being able compare them to all the
others I've indicated, I still enjoy their sound and feel they are certainly
worth an audition. IIRC when the first AKG 240 model appeared it was widely
advertised and used by hobbyists such as myself. As is the case with
loudspeakers each have a "flavor" all to their own, and I like being able to
listen to any and all which I accumulated over the years. Once in a great
while I put on my original Koss Pro/4AA just for laughs and can't understand
why and how these were so highly regarded in their heyday. Perhaps their
flavor resembles that of the Acoustic Research 3, also highly regarded way
back then , however they got to be one of the most uncomfortable things in
all of god's creation.
