"Dissolve the stuff"? You mean to say that you have to use a *solvent* in
which the contaminants are soluble.

Not necessarily a solvent, but a surfactant. Plain old water doesn't do
a good job of dissolving oily fingerprints.

I don't know if there is a "universal" solvent for all likely (AND
unlikely contaminants)- so it becomes a trial and error procedure.

Experience has shown that the better commercial vinyl cleaners do a fine
job in most cases. What's in 'em? Water, surfactant (usually a mild
detergent) and perhaps miniscule amounts of some other "miracle"
ingredients.

Surfactants (mild detergents) are as the word implies surface acting agents.
So do we await the arrival of "miracles" to clean records, purchase miracle
inducing agents at high prices, or choose between and amongst polar and
non-polar solvents to solubilize the "stuff".

Tap water? UGH! If you want to clean your LP's using the water and
soap method use distilled water.
Personally I use LAST record cleaner and conditioner.

I'll second the notion of using distilled water, at least as far as a rinse
solution is concerned. I used to use the LAST record cleaning products, and
still use their stylus cleaner, but that was before I discovered the Disc
Doctor record brushes/cleaning system. IMHO, the Disc Doctor products are more
effective in sigtnificantly reducing/eliminating dirt-associated ticks and
pops.

Yeah I've heard nothing but good things about the Disc Doctor system.
Years ago I had a Nitty Gritty that did a good job.
These days The only vinyl I have that is critical to me are my
collection of dbx discs which only require basic cleaning. Tics and
pops are not a problem as the decoders pretty much filter out all the
noise.
