Default What are definitional SACD or DVD-A recordings

Hello,

I have read from many people that the new hi-rez formats finally are comparable
to true analog. I would appreciate if anyone who has a true high end analog
setup and has listened to SACD and/or DVD-A could point me to some definitional
recordings that are at least comparable to analog. Thank you.

One that I find has remarkable fidelity is "Soular Energy" by
the Ray Brown Trio. This session has been remastered several
times; the version I am referring to is 192/24 PCM (DVD-A) in
the Hi-Res label, HRM-2011.

(I would like to listen to some of the new AIX recordings,
which are said to be quite good. However, I have been
frustrated at playing them, because my system doesn't include
a TV set.)

You don't mention your music preference, so I'll make some SACD
recommendations based on my own. I consider these recordings to be among
the finest I've ever heard.

Mahler's 6th on Telarc performed by Benjamin Zander & the Philharmonia
Orchestra
Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown & Milt Jackson - The Very Tall Band - also on
Telarc
McCoy Tyner Quartet - New York Reunion - on Chesky

Haven't got DVDAs here, but for SACD
*Bluesquest (Compilation of analogue Audioquest recordings).
Steer clear of the newer releases though - they've started using a DSD
recorder for tracking since, and the mastering involves conversion to analog
and back to DSD... The sound is terrible. I suppose they get money from
Sony.
*Any Opus3 SACD.

While I only have a few SACDs, I have made 24bit/96 KHz recordings
using
my finest LPS as the source and the results were essentially identical
to the LP. My LP playback equipment is pretty damn good too.
This would bode well for DVD-A which is essentially the same but maybe
even better because it supports 24/196 KHz format. I have no way to
do the same with SACD because as far as I know, there are no SACD
recorders available for home use.

What needs to be done is for someone to issue one of the finest analog
recordings ever made on LP & both DVD-A and SACD and then compare
compare the sound quality of the original master tape to the other
three using the best playback equipment for each format. That would
settle the issue once and for all.

Unfortunately, no it wouldn't. LP sounds the way it does becuse of the
various artifacts which are *added* to the sound of the original
master tape. If properly mastered, and used on equipment not sensitive
to the horrific RF noise of SACD, one would expect the DVD-A and SACD
copies to sound identical to the master (since they both vastly exceed
the bandwidth and dynamic range of any analogue master tape), while
the LP would sound quite different. Which you *prefer* is of course
another matter......................

BTW, one would also expect a well-mastered CD to sound identical to
the SACD and DVD-A in the above situation. See JVC XRCDs for fine
examples, since they are all made from analogue masters.
