Why is rec.audio.opinion flooded with political crap? What the hell
does any of this have to do with audio?

Is this worse than your claim that you have no accomplishments?

And, when you claimed that, are you admitting that:

A. pcabx wasn't actually an accomplishment

or

B. it actually wasn't *your* accomplishment?

Which is it? A or B?

I am flattered by the amount of attention Arthur Salvatore pays me. And
when Mr. Salvatore writes "There is no question that John Atkinson is a
very smart business man and nothing I know that he did was illegal," I
take that as praise. :-)

But when it comes to the case he makes on his website, even poor old
Arny Krueger could take some lessons from Mr. Salvatore whe it comes to
"data dredging." :-)

Funny, I had a horse. Used to ride him all the time on the trails around Stoney
Point. Pure bread Arabian. If you could afford to own a turntable like the
Forsell you might not be crying sour grapes all the time. But then you can't
afford any of the real estate around where I used to ride my horse. Never did
invest in a buggy whip.

Horses are good for riding, and riding horses can be lots of fun.
People use horses for entertainmnet, not for utility as a means
of transportation. So is listneing to reproduced music; its
for entertainment

No, it is clear that anyone who is amazed by an anual salary of 78,000 would
not likely be able to afford the Forsell Air Reference Turntable with the
Flywheel. Your bitterness and class envy have already been proven as fact. But
then you are not bright enough to even get my name right.

Naturally your own spelling errors, even gross ones like the one above bore
you. They expose your hypocrisy. I can see how that could become quite boring.

For goodness' sake, Mr. McCullough, don't you have a sense of humor? I
thought it clear that I was "cracking wise." How else do you think I
should respond to "Crazy Arthur" (as he is known in Toronto) and his
cooked-up case?

John Atkinson
Editor, Stereophile

Despite his case, while perhaps, being overstated there are certain aspects of
it that appear to have the characteristics of a marketing plan.

For example the RCL was advertised as having "700 Recommended Components.
During that time a quick stroke count of "Deletions" showed roughly 75 while
the January components reviewed list had roughly 150 for the previous year
(confirmed as well by an earlier Archibald editorial.)

An examination of that January component reviewed list for a few categories
showed that every product reviewed was found on the next April RCL.

Given that limited data it would not have been surprising if the list had been
increasing in size by 75 units per year.

Surprisingly a stroke count of the list showed it only contained a little over
500 components. Shortly after this was posted on the newsgroups the new RCL
issue cover announced "500 Recommended Components."

Of course, a count error (not that hard to do) could simply be an oversight but
on the face of it seems more likely to be just a by-product of marketing
strategy especially when every reviewed (AFAICT) product ends up being
"Recommended."

Hence one reason for the skepticism.

I'm sure now that Mr. Krueger has never modified his web site and that

Good gracious, I am shocked, shocked. First, I am called a "smart business

course, guilty on both counts! But perhaps it needs be asked why these
things are supposed to be so dreadful?

John Atkinson

Nothing, of course. But your RCL is said to be a list of Components that are
Recommended based on sonic performance; when it appears that it is more

likely
simply a tool for marketing the magazine.

Is there anything on that list that you would consider not
recommending based on "sonic performance"?

You mean besides expensive wire, equipment racks and high output impedance
amplifiers? Or more expensive amplification devices that appear to be sonically
indistinguishable from less expensive models? In the latter regard I might
reverse desireablility order :-)
