Hello Scott,
I am interested in upgrading a couple of my APEX 430 condensors. I have recently been getting some background noise from these mics and I though this mod would rectify the problem. There must be some caps going bad or something to that effect. It sounds like a low level rumble. Sometimes it will go away after a few min. Are you still selling your upgrade kits for this style of mics? I know that this upgrade kit is adaptable to the MXL 2001 and a few other brands, but I wasn't sure if it would work for the APEX 430s. The guts do look similar. Thanks for your time, ART |

Odds are this is due to gunk on the PC board, or possibly gunk on the capsule. This is very high impedance stuff. Spray the board with flux remover and see if the noise goes away. If it doesn't, the capsule may need to be cleaned, and that's harder. (It could also be a failing capacitor, but that's a lot less likely.... cleanliness on the production line is not exactly good in some of these facilities). It does not take much flux or dirt to be a serious problem because even a tiny amount of current leakage is disasterous with the high input impedance. If you get the original article from Recording (call 303-516-9118 and order the thing; they know which issue it is even though I don't offhand), the boards are available for the same price. I also now have a slightly improved kit which includes standoffs to mount the high impedance stuff on; it makes construction a little bit easier and you don't have to be as careful about cleaning the board. It's $20 for the regular board+fet kit, and $25 for the one with the standoffs. You could also save $15 and order just the FET from me and use perfboard, but frankly it's a pain in the neck and the $25 is worth the time savings. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. I might have to call them to save some time filtering through the issues. How do you handle the payment end of things. Would you want a money order or would Paypal be an option? Thanks again ART |

I have pretty much given up on dealing with Paypal these days due to worries about security. --scott -- "C'est un Nagra. C'est suisse, et tres, tres precis." |
