I use my Sony 7506 and MDR V6 for checking flaws like bad splices, noise,
hiss and other anomalies but they are not good for checking frequency
balance or for critical listening.

My question is, are any of you using high end audiophile type phones for
checking frequency balance, in order to eliminate room effects?
Especially on the low end.

I'm speaking of Grado RS-1 or Senny HD650, or Stax etc...

I am also considering a set of high end phones for critical listening to
compliment my BW speakers in my home audio system.
My beloved AKG's were swiped a few years ago and I just never got around
to replacing them and suffering with the 7506's (for casual listening)
instead.

So?

I'm leaning toward the Senny 650 vs the RS-1 because the RS-1 price seems
way out of whack and I have been told they are not the most comfortable
cans to wear.

Also can I drive the Senny's without a high output headphone amp?
IOW will my Soundcraft/Marantz/iPod drive these things?

I do mostly jazz, lite pop and classical.

Advice?

And of course TIA!!

One last thing, play a Wilson Pickett record today to honor his talent.
