Absolutely, call EV... they'll turn it around relatively quickly and
likely less costly than anyone else. I've had them do a couple
of the past year with results as positive as possible.

Will they refurb my 'trashed' RE11 too ?

I know it came with a *lifetime* warranty !

EV used to do them for free. Then they did them for cheap. Now reportedly
they are charging serious money. Sigh.

Five years ago they would have honored the warranty and refurbed it for
free. But with the new management at EV, they are not doing this stuff
for free any more.

I just had 2 of them refurbed. Cost about $50 each.

How is it that EV gets away with dumping the *Lifetime Warranty*? Is there
wording in the warranty that says something like *as long as the company
is owned by the current managment*?

Happened right around the time they left Buchanan Michigan IIRC. Could
the laws in their new home state allowed them to void it?

They started edging out of this when the world moved from PRO SOUND to
EVERYBODY-HOBBY-MI sound as a $$$-market. Their double-badging of select
items in the line in the late 70's an d80's with the PL line, wherein the
DS and RE series mics got a new number (ie the DS-35 became a PL-6 IIRR),
new finish, slightly lowered specs and a non-lifetime warranty and a lower
price and put them into the music stores competing with AT and the other
up-n-coming mid/lo-price band mics.

QUOTE:
-----------------------------------
Ah, the PLs vs. the REs. It¹s a tale of great mics and marketing. At the
time the PL Series was conceived, the RE Series was well established as a
broadcast and ENG standard. However, people discovered how great these mics
sounded on all sorts of other sources in the studio and on stage. So, a
decision was made to sort of relaunch some of the RE series in a new
line‹the PL Series. Most notable of these were the RE20 and RE11, but the
635A was also pulled in and remarketed. There were also some mics that were
unique to the PL line (the PL76, for example), but the main pillars of the
line were the PL20 and the PL11, which, aside from the prefix and color of
the mic itself, were exactly the same as their RE counterparts. For various
reasons, the PL line has gone away, but the RE line lives on.

So, at the end of the day, the PL20 is the same as the RE20, the PL11 is the
same as the RE11 and the PL5 is the same as the 635A. The only real
difference is color and marketing. Some people will claim that they can hear
a difference, but that is due to factors other than design and components
(age, condition, etc.)

Hope that clears things up. If you need anything else, as always, just let
me know.

Sincerely,

Ethan Wetzell

Have they indeed DROPPED the top-pro reputation-making
"if-you-can-break-it-send-us-the-remains-so-we-can-see-how-and-we'll-fix/rep
lace-it" benchmark on the full-top-line RE stuff? Have we really gotten THAt
disposable?

Well, I just got a couple mics back from Telex recently, so I'll throw
a few recommendations out...

Make sure you get a quote (!), and ask for one up front before repairs
are
undertaken. I sent in 2 mics-- an RE55 which they were unable to fix,

and wound up paying 91 bucks plus s/h to fix a 635a--something I would
not have
done if they indeed had quoted me a price.
My bad for not insisting on a quote...

EV used to have a spectacular repair service, and fixed several 408s
and 635a's for me (dig this) for free.
I certainly didn't expect free repairs this time around, but I will say

the EVs in my mic cabinet sure multiplied after the past gratis
service...
It was a great PR move, IMHO, and one that will be missed....

Now then....
I've got an RE55 that crackles that Telex said they couldn't repair.
Does anyone know what might be wrong with the mic, or better yet, know
someone who might be able to fix it?

Thanks in advance....
Bruce

I just got a quote for cleaning and checking my PL20: $50 bench fee, plus any
parts and shipping. (So much for lifetime warranty. Then again, they didn't
specify whose life.)

On the other hand, a new set of neoprene suspension cords for my 309A shockmount
were only $4 a piece.
