Default Amp Saturation??

Hello all. In short I never turn my amp off, its a Bryston 4B powering
Yorkville YSM-1's, and at times its on for months. My question is:
Will leaving an amp on for extended periods of time effect its
performance and cause it to not work as efficiently? The reason I ask
is that there seems to be days where my system is much more fatiguing
to work with and I have a strong hunch it has alot to do with the amp.
So all other factors aside do I have anything here or am I way off
base? Thanks.

I would suspect the YSM-1's of fatiguing your ears before the Bryston amp.

It's normal for a system to "sound different" on different days. In my opinion,
90% of it is psychological.

You may have stale electrons in your speaker leads. Disconnect them,
and apply a dc voltage source (such as a 1.5v dry cell) for a few
minutes.

LOL!!

No.

Aside from psychological factors, there are two possibilities. First, your
AC power may be sagging sometimes; you can easily check that wuth a digital
voltmeter.

Second, I've seen a couple of Bryston amps with intermittently wonky bias
pots; when they go open, the amp's output stage has no quiescent current,
and exhibits plenty of crossover distortion, which is quite audiible. To
find out if that's the case, on a day when the system sounds bad, put your
hand on the heatsink for each channel. If one or more channels is bad, its
heatsink will be cool rather than warm. (Pardon the bad grammar, but you
know what I mean.)

Peace,
Paul

The amp will actually sound better after a day or two of warm-up.

Agreed, I leave all my SS amps on, including my monitor amp, audio
interfaces, even my DVD player and digital cable box. FYI Hitatchi DVD
players have the option to disable auto-power-off, only brand name with a
decent Burr-Brown DAC that can be left on. It's just as beneficial to leave
preamps on as power amps.

I find alkaline causes a much "drier" sound and carbon makes the bass
"bloated". Rechargeable nicads soften the highs, while li-ons have the
best soundstage. YMMV snip

As a long time Bell System tech, I know what I'm talking about.
COnnect some vintage "Blue Bell" talk battery cells to give that
speaker wire the "vintage tube" sound you so desire! I just happen to
have a 50' boxcar full of them. Quantity discounts!

I used to do the battery trick, but I simply couldn't find a battery that
really renewed that original sound. Instead I spent $5k on a pair of 6'
cryogenically sealed platinum/titanium alloy cables and you won't believe
the diffrerence, even after 2 years! No stale sound around here! snip

You know what else is good? Closing a storm window on your testicles,
that works, too! Just slam that thing on your teabag...cleans up that
sound RIGHT now, at a fraction of the cost!

Wanna explain how you know that?
