Default Low Cost Monitor Question

For over a decade I've had near field monitors exclusively because of
the size and type of my studio. I need to get some speakers that will
fill a much bigger room now and really don't know what's out there. The
near fields that I have are all in the $400 a pair range and have suited
me fine. Now I need something that will fill a room of about 20x20 with
sound. I already have a crown ce 1000 and a ce2000 and need to find
something that will pair with one or both of those. I don't know if I
need to do a sub with speakers or what so any thought on speakers would
be good. keep in mind that this is not a studio for hire so i don't need
to impress anyone but myself.

thanks

Give the Mackies a try. They aren't the best things around, but they are
good for the price and enough people are familiar with them that if you say,
"I don't like this about the Mackies" that people will have some baseline
to understand what you mean.

And they are extended enough that you will very soon figure out where your
room problems are. 20x20 does not sound like a good ratio to me, but without
speakers that have some low end you won't know where things go wrong.

If you have more money, there's a large upgrade path... lots of stuff out
there that is much better than the Mackie. But the Mackie is a surprisingly
decent little package for the money and it's a familiar reference point.
At least worth borrowing one for the weekend.

Scott,

Yeah, I have a little place i am setting up in for a few months and it
is not ideal. I'm just staying in Utah for a while because my wife is
taking care of her grandpa. I really didn't want to get into anything
more then bare necessities so I will start there and see.

thanks

You can find a pair of unpowerd Tannoy Reveals for under $500 US. The size of
the room is not the big thing here, how is this room constructed?

Look here.

ome/search/d=tp?q=tannoy

It's actually just a industrial part type office that is a 14 foot roof
with concrete walls and flooring and a drywall in the middle. I'm going
to use some home depot sound board and fiberglass to dampen it and the
whole room setup needs to last me till christmas and then I walk away.
this is going to be a rough but ready quick fix to having to bee out of
town for a while. The 20x20 room is as bad as it gets but I thought i
would try to put some monitors on the walls so I could get away from
near field for a while. I might be better off with the old set up though
now that I've thought about it for a while. Scott suggested Mackie and
that might be the way to go.

thanks

I had a chance to hear a pair of the Mackies once and didn't like them to much,
after I found the Tannoy's I've not even thought of any thing else that I can
afford at this time. The room I'm putting together is going to be a bit smaller
(starting at 14X16) than what your looking at but I'm going for a permanent
deal. I'm most likely going for a trapezoid shape but still have some more
thinking to put into it.

I've dismissed those in the past for no reason other then I have never
really seen them anywhere. I'll give those a hear too and thanks for you
input.

You might look into the Alesis powered monitor...M1, I believe. They are
$400 a pair and sound pretty darn good...I've done some great mixes on
these...just another option. Good luck!

I have a pair of those but I wanted something with a little more
wattage. Once upon a time i would swear I saw a set of Alesis Monitor
3's but have never been able to find them again. I am very use to the M1
and if such an animal as the M3 lives I would probably have no
transition time.
