Default Next step?

I'm recording classical guitar with a Tascam us122 and a pair of
Oktava MC012's from the Sound Room. The quality is decent, but it
feels like it could be better. I don't know how to describe it other
than to say that it feels a little "muddy". I've experimented quite a
bit with mic placement, and although I am still only a novice, I don't
think I could do that much better with my current setup.

From reading through this group, it sounds like adding a decent preamp
like a FMR RNP might be a good idea. Would this be a noticable
improvement over the us122? Would I need to replace the us122 with a
nice soundcard in order to see the full benefit of the RNP?
Any other recommendations?

Thanks in advance for your help

How's the room your using? Yes, better converters can be of a great help but if
it's got a junky sound before it hits them, it will always be there.

Try a different room. Even when close-miking, a lot of bottom end problems
come from the room.

A better preamp is certainly not a bad idea. Better converters aren't
a bad idea either. But if you have a room problem or a monitoring problem,
the best preamp in the world won't help you.
